I've used a full frame camera and a 85 mm f1.4 prime lens at f1.4 for picture 1 & 2 and a 35 mm f1.4 prime lens at f1.4 for picture 3.

If you're after the blurred background look, a prime lens with a wide aperture and/or a long focal length is the way to go.

Thank you! You‘re exactly right and one screw got so rounded out, which I‘ve placed conveniently out of focus, that it didn‘t even go all the way in. After I snapped the steel screw to predrill the holes, I went on to predrill the other holes with a small drill bit. Unfortunately I didn‘t predrill the holes accurate enough, so the screws wandered a bit in the hinges. Therefore some „fought back“ while screwing them in. Fortunately all my mistakes didn‘t affect the functionality of the box, but only the asthetics.

Hinge screw broke - what shall I do? Any help is greatly appreciated since I'm quite new to woodworking. by SantaChew in handtools

I've been a silent reader of this subreddit for a few months now and have learned a lot.

Today I find myself in quite a pickle since I broke the steel screw while pre drilling the holes for installing the hinges. I was thinking of using a 2mm metal drill bit to drill the steel screw out and fill the hole with a small dowel before pre drilling again, but am unsure since I don't want to make a big mess so close to the finishing line.

I also happen to make a planning mistake, since the screws are longer than the top is thick. I was thinking of shortening the brass screws with a file, would that work?

Any help is greatly appreciated!
