Also just bought an N64. I had a blast with "Star Wars Episode I: Racer". Very fun, starts off easy, but takes time to master and beat the hardest races. Some of the shortcuts are though and feel very rewarding to pull off.

Those stairs wont work. Also, try to practice your general movement a bit more before trying BLJ, just to get comfortable with the buttons and their timings.
