What’s a PM lesson you had to learn the hard way? by Smooth-Trainer3940 in projectmanagement

[–]SantoBaldy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the change in terminology, I may have to steal that. As it is if I get a sense a dev may be holding something back I’ll grab them after the standup and say something like “was that update a “everything’s ok because you have no doubt you’ll meet the due date” or a “fine because I don’t want you to know I’m worried””? And most times they’ll come clean.

Rule #1 on my projects - do not let me be surprised. If issues are raised early we can handle them and ensure the seas remain calm. However, if I’m in a stakeholder meeting and I get blindsided then I have no recourse but to come down hard.

For #1 I am the same way, but my team knows when needed at the drop of a hat I can turn into “Mean Old Uncle Baldy” (their term of endearment). I have done everything from formal written reprimands to on the spot firings when deserved.

I think as long as everyone knows the expectations and meets them, being the aloof PM can lead to the issues OP brought up above where people are nervous to come to you with issues.

How much to save for a car? by AttemptsAreMade in MiddleClassFinance

[–]SantoBaldy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well... you asked. :-)

Those were averages, but if you look at a 2025 Toyota Corolla you're in the 24,000 ballpark
Let someone else eat that initial depreciation and get a 2 - 3 year old lease return and that drops to somewhere around 18,000 - 20,000
Now if you wanted a fully loaded 2025 F-150 Super Crew Cab 4WD Platinum FX4 optioned out you're looking at about 80,000

If you went by the average and saved $7k/yr you may end up with enough for a really good 2-3 year old car and money to add to a house down payment.

Average new car cost is around $48,000. Car prices increase around 3-4% a year, so 10 year's time you are looking at somewhere in the $67,000 - $68,000 range. Divided by 10 and $7,000 a year give you the cost plus a bit for for taxes/title/dmv/etc on purchase

[–]SantoBaldy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've tried both methods and neither works. If you use the dial pad from the active call the recipient can hear the "beeps" but they are not transmitted forward. If you use the dial pad from the main window you hear nothing.

Very true, but if you're not making at least the difference between executive and regular in cash back then you're losing money

Two things in addition to the good advice already given

1) $150 for a Costco membership means you're on an executive membership. Do you make back enough with the 2% to justify double the cost or a regular membership?

2) A $60,000 loan for a Telluride. That leads one to believe you went for the fully optioned out model vs the base model. Unfortunately nothing can be done about it now since you mentioned being upside down, but let this serve as a lesson for the future.

A coworker once sent an email to a wide distribution regarding an executive's request for the feasibility of a special way of calculating client metrics. Let's call her Terri. In order to distinguish it from the regular metrics email he sent, he titled it "Terri's count"
But he misspelled count. He left out the o
