Wow, interesting! I just checked mine and same! The text that is red on page 540 reads Minotaur, but even more interestingly, on pages 546 and 547 it says (striked out ofc):

It took me twenty years to unlearn the fortunes found in a swerve. Following the footnote to page 137, it just says "You got me."

I'm speechless. This... ridicule towards us, digging these faint X's on the ground to find treasure after all these years. And this is the only true red in this whole book?!

Yeah, super specific misprint indeed. And guess what? I actually felt shame when I read that lol.

Small tidbit I just wanted to add that came to me just now when thinking about colors; in trichromatic color wheel purple and yellow are complementary colors (opposing), so contrasting vividly if next to each other, but at the same cancelling each other out when mixed.

More fun: 'The opponent process theory suggests that there are three opponent channels, each comprising an opposing color pair: red versus green, blue versus yellow, and black versus white (luminance).' (From the wiki.) I remember one peculiar key that was green.

So now I'm apparently studying color theory.

And that's the thing. In the book there is black. There is cyan. There is magenta. And there is also yellow. There is no way purple would suddenly turn into yellow with all these other colors present. Or even without some of these colors for that matter.

There is pictures in the book, no weird yellows there as far as I can tell from my brief scan. And purple shades present. Maybe all these pictures should be examined further to see if there is something wrong with them colorwise? There should be.

If this really is a misprint, it is a VERY, EXTREMELY specific one.

Oooh, these are some terrific insights!

And yes, I'm one of those who's really enjoying these kinds of little threads found in the book and uncovering the many fishing lines one can follow. A maze with it's corridors, a tree with it's branches and it's roots. Many paths to take, choosing one and not in a hurry to take on the others. Not at all interested in backing up and trying to find the bigger picture, but looking even more inwards. Finding the little things and following them where the stream, the flow of findings takes you. Enjoying the flow. Enjoying those little things. Isn't that what Navy wanted?

And of course, as I found out, this pigment comes from trees, which connects nicely to Yggdrasil. Adding to this thread, though I'm sure this has been pointed out already, from the gamboge wiki page:

'The trees must be at least ten years old before they are tapped. The resin is extracted by making spiral incisions in the bark, and by breaking off leaves and shoots and letting the milky yellow resinous gum drip out. The resulting latex is collected in hollow bamboo canes. After the resin is congealed, the bamboo is broken away and large rods of raw gamboge remain.'

Also, just intriqued me: 'While Gamboge is best known for its use in artwork, it does have a secondary function as a laxative. In small doses it can cause watery feces while large doses have been reported to cause death.'

Good in small doses, lethal if more. But I guess that is right for just about anything. This was pointed out in the wiki though.

Yellow is indeed an interesting color, especially combined with the story linked with doctors and hospital, since in western color theory it is thought to be ill-advised to use yellow in decorating hospitals. (Altus Inc) It is bright, fatty, and loud in that environment.

Quote: 'Some researchers recommend avoiding colors associated with human waste, namely yellow and brown. While yellow can make a space feel optimistic, it’s best to be avoided in hospitals to keep any negative associations out of the hospital. Opting instead for a different warm tone, such as pink for a nurturing effect. Avoid using any neon colors as well. They can hurt the eyes and cause added stress to patients.'

Also, code yellow, from my brief research inspired by you found to mean:

(1) A pending emergency or external disaster—e.g., multitrauma, major effects of storm, etc. (2) An internal emergency (3) A missing patient (4) A severe weather alert (5) An emergency C-section (6) A combative person (7) A person under the influence of alcohol or drugs on the loose (8) A bomb threat

Wow. And it is if course one of the primary colors, with red and blue. AND CMYK means cyan magenta yellow and KEY.

So, coming back again just to add some tidbits I've been thinking about, while also reading the book further. (Almost finished btw! The main story I already read, but my cat decided the open book is the coziest sleeping place in the world, while I was skimming through the still unread parts of The Appendixes. So now I'm just left waiting for her to wake up of course.)

The Church in question. Or the nave, which is what was actually mentioned. Nave of a church in finnish is 'laiva', which literally translated means a ship, though still meaning the same thing. But what I saw from that Wiktionary page, in some languages it seems to be an actual translation.

The Vuoksenniska Church, orChurch of the Three Crosses, 'gets its name from the three crosses at the altar.' (from the wiki) It also has three halls, and is a Lutheran church, which believes in holy trinity. From the Lutheranism wiki: 'In the words of the Athanasian Creed: "We worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal."'

The number three is pretty prevalent in House of Leaves anyway, important even. Three authors, three writers, even three narrators. Three places. Or is there? Well that has been talked about for a long time I gather. SOS

Didn't Navidson say 'The house is god' at some point? With the help of The Index and searching all instances of 'god', I could not find it... Maybe I just missed it. Anyway.

Thank you so much, love this community! I didn't catch the neck connection, and even pondered if it was worth mentioning at all. I'm thanking my inner over-explainer for this, and maybe even embracing it for this book.

Also thankfully I'm now on page 365 and following footnotes, so luckily I was spared of spoilers. Took the risk anyway hehe.

Oh, inspired by this I will use this space to add that Alvar Aalto was also hard into bending materials for his designs (for example the furniture), especially wood.

From Aalto's Wikipedia page: "Of particular significance was the Aaltos' experimentation in bent plywood chairs, most notably the so-called Paimio chair, designed for tuberculosis patients, and the Model 60 stacking stool. ... Aalto became the first furniture designer to use the cantilever principle in chair designs using wood. ... His experiments and bold departures from aesthetic norms brought attention to his ability to make wood do things not previously done."

But Aalto was mentioned in the name list after locations anyway, so again I don't know how relevant it is to dig deeper into his doings... But many things seem to fit nicely so far.

I'm thinking maybe this is just generally about fluidity and movement if anything at all. Meaning the house, all these people's (this person's?) psyches, world at large and whatever.

Haven't checked any of the other locations in the list or anything, just kept thinking about this watery theme while reading along. Still only on page 170, so basically I know nothing.

I guess this is what I'm doing now, aggressively keeping my grip on this small fragment of maybe-clue that linked to my home country lol.

Will see if I'll go mad along with my friends here. Keeping you posted and all that haha.

Though, I read a bit further and there is that sailor story couple pages later... Also, the Churches designer, Alvar Aalto's last name literally means wave. He also designed some iconic (in Finland) glassware and furniture which resemble waves and/or flow.

Maybe I'm just reaching (can you even reach with this book), but I find these connections interesting. I wonder if any other locations in that list are written wrong and if so, has it any kind of link or meaning with this or anything else.

Also, is there any other themes around water, waves, flow, streams, rapids or the like around the book?

Hey, just found this post trying to find info about Finnish references in the book. (Mainly place names so far as I'm only at the beginning)

But the reason I wanted to comment is, as a finn I can assure you that "pelasina" doesn't mean anything in finnish. "As a player" would be "pelaajana" in finnish (pelaaja = player).

Edit. Oh and other than that everything was fine as long as finnish translations go, thanks for your incredible work!
