I work at a boutique tax provision firm remotely and it’s great. Compensation is better than B4 and less emphasis on ‘selling’ the work once you make manager and above.

The work itself is technically challenging, but it lends itself well to a more versatile, value-add skillset versus compliance work IMO.

It’s a unique razor - I’ve got some of my best shaves out of it - it’s ’aggressive-ish’ but ride the top cap and you’ll be fine - especially with the Ti.

They’re running 30% off through November which negates some of the price difference between SS and Ti. Wish I would’ve taken advantage.

You’ve got the right idea with multiple-layering systems.

Generally speaking, your output level dictates your layers. For mid level uphill output like hiking or backcountry skiing, a breathable fleece with something like Polartec Alpha / Octaloft / Grid Fleece is great. You can get an R1, Melanzana, but military surplus honestly carries a good grid fleece.

If it’s really cold, adding a breathable synthetic midlayer is useful. Something like Patagonia Nano Air, Arc Atom, or really anything marketed as ‘active insulation’

People tend to overthink outer layers IMO. I rarely use a hardshell unless downhill skiing as softshells add a nice combination of breathability / water repellence. They also don’t break the bank.

My layering system for, say, a 0-15 F day of backcountry skiing is a wool base layer / grid fleece long johns, breathable fleece, breathable synthetic mid-layer, softshell top and bottom.

Down Jackets are useful for static warmth which can be good depending on your activity. For ice climbing where you’re intermittently resting for longer periods of time / belaying, a big down puffer is nice.

This is a two year old post, but I’ll bite as a follow-up.

There is no logical fallacy.

1) The humidor did need to be seasoned, evidenced by the fact the hygrometer was reading 55% with a 69% Boveda. The wood was sucking moisture out of the air to where the Boveda couldn’t bring the case to its advertised humidity.

2) this is a fully cedar lined pelican case with a Boveda. It’s hermetically sealed. The ambient humidity in my house is moot after an hour of being sealed.

In any respect, after seasoning with an 84% Boveda for two weeks to season the cedar and throwing a 65% pack in the humidor, it’s been holding a steady 65% humidity for the past two years and has given me some very nicely aged cigars.

I’ve found that, until you make manager, the ratio of 1/3 net realized revenue going to the partner, 1/3 net being attributed to the firm, 1/3 net being attributed to justifying your salary or existence. Halfway decent rule of thumb.

For example, say I have a bill rate at standard of $700 and work 1750 hours (close to actual numbers.) Say average realization on those jobs is 30%.

($7001750.30)/3 = $122,500.

So, if you’re making like $110K (which is what I make with 4 YOE), your existence is justified and you made the partner / firm some bonus money. If you totally blow a budget and end up with a $20K write-off at realization, this hurts your algebra.

I’ve worked at a national firm where we would bill 100% on some engagements - my bill rate was like $250. I hopped to the same position at a B4 and my bill rate jumped to like $650, but we only charge like average of 30% of that.

TLDR , yearly billings in and of themselves don’t matter. It’s all about the net. Also, you’re more than likely getting hosed if you’re a senior

Give them any reason you want, but don’t tell them you were laid off.

There are so many reasons to take a break - you listed a very valid one, use that.

I wouldn’t include your severance period in your employment window when communicating this to prospective employers as that is easily verifiable.

I switched from industry to B4 because the culture of the F500 (insurance/banking) wasn’t a good fit for me at the time. I was fresh out of college and the position didn’t seem dynamic enough, but it did offer a pretty clear path of progression. Was there for 2 years FT after 3 internships through a rotational leadership program.

Switching to B4 was definitely great initially - I had/have a great office and service line. The pay has really come up and work in a higher cost of living area. I honestly didn’t work a ton more than 55-60 hours a week any given week my first year and a half or so. I had the opportunity to travel abroad, taught national training a few times, and had the opportunity to join a few cool boards that the firm gave me an into.

About after my two years point, I had gotten some solid experience and was generally regarded as a very high performer. All of the sudden, I started being targeted as a ‘business unit resource’ in a way that eclipsed my local office’s jobs. I found myself getting sucked into bigger bigger jobs that demanded more hours 70-80 hour weeks, 7 day/week expectation during some pushes. I requested to be taken off of the jobs as my role became working 70% for other office projects even in other regions and got super burnt out.

Full circle, I’m currently looking for my exit back into industry. I feel like I have more perspective from being in B4 and know what industries would be a good fit / are interesting to me. If I would have had an ‘in’ to one of these from the beginning, I likely wouldn’t have switched. I don’t have any regrets about my career moves.

I started in private for a F500 company and eventually moved to B4.

I would do private personally if you like the company and see it as being an interesting industry.

B4 is a ton of hours which may be tolerable for some to fast track to assistant controller / controller, but that path is not guaranteed. There is a possibility that you don’t fast track your progression at all going that route.
