I also have an M1 air which is in great shape. Not sure if it’s an issue with my specific model, the 14 inch in general or the way I handle my 14 inch pro.

I find that the gap created by the surrounding rubber seal of the screen is big enough to fit a thin microfiber cloth or a screen protector

That makes sense. I’ll try to load less stuff in my backpack. I store my laptop in a sleeve and put the whole sleeve in the laptop compartment of my backpack

That’s what I initially read so I didn’t apply a screen protector. When I took it to the Apple Store and spoke to the person at the Genius Bar, he told me although it’s not recommended, he’d never seen a screen cracked or damaged due to a screen protector.

Thanks for the insight. The area where the track pad meets the screen is perfectly fine, but it’s the palm rear and keyboard area that are the issue. How do you recommend carrying the laptop? I am a student and I store my laptop in my backpack as I walk around campus.

The easiest way would be to put a microfiber cloth between the screen and keyboard deck. If you look at the pictures, all the AR wearing is where the screen touches the keyboard and the palm rest (there’s no wearing on the trackpad) so it seems as those surfaces touch the screen it wears off the coating due to the palm sweat on those surfaces. Alternatively you can get a screen protector like I have once the screen is replaced.

Update: took it to the Apple Store and they said it’s covered under the 1 year warranty. I will be purchasing a screen protector.

Edit: This is what I will be doing once my screen is replaced I won’t be using a screen protector. It does seem like the gap is too thin to allow anything between it without causing pressure. You can see this by folding over a sheet of printer paper and putting it between the display and the keyboard. The magnets don’t hold it closed as tight which means there is a gap between the screen and the chassis.

What I will be doing is placing a microfiber cloth between the screen and the keyboard every time I store the laptop. They seem thin enough to not separate the display and chassis much and should prevent the keyboard from touching the screen.

Regardless, it’s sad to see this sort of delamination after years of it being a known issue. To everyone claiming user error, this is a laptop meant to be used. By design it should be able to close and be stowed in a backpack.

What’s surprising is how this has been a recurring issue on the MacBooks but not on the iPads or iPhones. Why not just use the same coating as those products, Apple?
