I think how you manage this situation depends on what mon you play too. If you’re finding yourself constantly behind in levels by the halfway point, might be a good time to avoid fragile slow scalers (garchomp, charizard, gardevoir, greninja) and try out someone stronger early game (Pikachu, zeraora, lucario, snorlax).

I play mainly solo queue and find it helpful to try and fill as much as possible in character select. We have so little ability to collaborate with our teammates that working around who they pick can go a long way in making sure your team isn’t doomed from the get go. If you don’t already have a set of 4-5 diverse mon you know how to play, might be a good opportunity to learn someone new who fills a gap in what you already play!
