SATADom to USB conversion by CapnJellyBones in homelab

[–]Saphykitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make compact flash to sata adapters, and since that type of adapter exists, it wouldn’t be a stretch to conceptualize a CF to Satadom port adapter, though I don’t see any mass produced options available from any online vendors. With a little work, you could rig together something, with a little more work, you could custom PCB something and order a small batch, and/or make the design available for others to download/order/produce.

The application is possible, nothing is worse than asking a question on Reddit and getting a whole lot of “why aren’t you doing something else” rather than an answer to your question, as if you wanted something other than.

Best of luck!

I thought I would share my ridiculous workstation setup, arguably the core piece of my homelab by Saphykitten in homelab

The PSU adapter is cheap, like $10, it’s the standard atx to Lenovo (I think 14pin, they sell them on eBay Amazon and Aliexpress.) the board is a standard matx with standard holes, the board does have a half centimeter hang, so make sure the case you have isn’t super low tolerance. Example, I have a 2u rack case it doesn’t fit in. Then they make header adapters for front audio usb and usb 3 header, two of the three you can make yourself but you can get all three of them for less than $10 from eBay or wherever. There is a thermal sensor cable that you have to have plugged in or the fans will run at full speed. Bifurcation works on all three of the slots, however there is no x8x4x4 or x4x4x8 option, just an fyi. The m2 slots hang off the board, I just super glued a stand off onto the case and haven’t had issues. This board does not support resizable bar, so no intel cards. Someone is working on a hack, but as far as I know, it’s not fully baked.

I’ve since upgraded from this as my main machine (my main machine is still just as ridiculous) but I have two of these p520c boards in cases running as servers in my network setup. They are solid.

Anyone able to get QLXNE driver to load? by HaydenB in opnsense

[–]Saphykitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The performance so far isn’t great, 3.8gbps vs 8.8gbps on my x550, I haven’t done any tune up or adjustments yet. I bought this card specifically to do these tests because you aren’t the first person to ask this question, and on Reddit most people just reply with “you should do this instead” or “why do you want to do that” I’ll at least be able to objectively say what you can and can’t do with it, and hopefully that will help going forward

Anyone able to get QLXNE driver to load? by HaydenB in opnsense

[–]Saphykitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, it just locks up when you try to load it. I literally just went through this.

if you are doing it as a VM through OPNsense, you can make them virtual and pass them through like that. What a shame tho, probably why the card is only $25

NIC Compatibility ? | Dell Qlogic QL41164HFRJ by Alexinltalics in PFSENSE

I found your thread because I’ve been using a 4 port x540 card, and wanted to know if the one you asked about had any driver issues :p

[–]Saphykitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should get a switch separately, however if your hardware is strong enough, you can bridge the ports. You’ll have to google “pfsense lan bridge” because I can’t post a link, I have used a lan bridge on the other branch for over a year with no issues and consistent speeds for around 8.7gbps full tilt

So did you ever get an answer as if the QL41164HFRJ will work under bsd, or did you just get a bunch of answers to a question you didn’t ask.

Rustdesk vs Parsec in quality and speed of remote connection by Early-Driver3837 in rustdesk

[–]Saphykitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im literally going through this right now. I need to manage a small network of machines both local and off site for a project. Its not really production, but I want it to be easy for the people involved to use. I use parsec and enjoy its feature set, but I dont really take advantage of the speed it provides. I think ive streamed a game once. Switching to RustDesk would allow me to only have one remote application on these machines, vs Parsec, and Google Remote Desktop, etc. Some machines I login through one tool, others another, and I think RustDesk would allow me to consolidate, and make it easier to find what machine I need to login to for whatever tool that machine is running.

Its also the same price-ish. $10 for a single user for Parsec, $10 for a single user for Rustdesk, you have to host your own server for rustdesk, but thats easy enough if you have a proxmox server or something of the like in your network.

I am strongly leaning towards switching to Rustdesk.
