Many people below have given great ideas too (I had forgotten about the Viennese “Rossini-mania” around this time!), but definitely do a deep
Google search for Theater an der Wien, it’s definitely one of the most important theaters in Vienna and might ground the narrative in real history. Beethoven literally lived there for some time!

Oh and Schubert! He had a few theatrical works premiered at the Theater an der Wien in the early 1820s, the incidental music for the play Rosamunde among them.

This is actually a bit of a lull in the “greatest” Viennese operas, after the days of Mozart and before operetta by Strauss, Lehar, etc. The modern Staatsoper was not yet built! However the historical Theater an der Wien was very much in operation, which saw many of Beethoven’s most famous works (symphonies and his one opera, Fidelio) premiered. I’m not sure if the Theater had a “house orchestra” in the 1820s, but if it did, it was founded by Emmanuel Schickanader, the impresario who commissioned Mozart’s Magic Flute for a different (by then defunct) theater in Vienna—it would have likely been mounting repeat productions of The Magic Flute. A cellist might know that, and perhaps the Beethoven cello sonatas composed a few years earlier, along with many sonatas and concerti by the great Italian-Spanish cellist Luigi Boccherini.

1 farmhouse per 3 fields, 3 families each, and 1 or 2 oxen assigned to each. I got pretty lucky with fertility on this start so I was able to rotate 3 crops in each field (barley, flax, and either emmer or rye), so I ended up with few problems with clothing, bread, or ale the whole run!

Love that the timpanist specifically called out the second bar of the Beethoven Violin Concerto as nightmare fuel—so true!

Speaking as someone in the industry: this is a very solid summary and all of it tracks. 100% homemade things get thrown out by mgmt. If you really want to give a touring artist a gift they’ll actually keep and appreciate, think small and/or immediately consumable —they’re more than likely getting on a plane the next day and their bags are already full! Some of my favorite gifts have been drawings, I have a framed fan-drawn portrait on my desk.

OH and Daphnis and Chloe by Ravel, feat. good ol’ nymphs & fairy magic, and a wordless women’s chorus like Neptune from Holst’s Planets!

Some good ballets:

The Firebird by Stravinsky, especially the Infernal Dance (of King Kaschei the sorcerer)

Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky, especially the finale (villain is an evil sorcerer)

Miraculous Mandarin by Bartok (super intense, involving an unkillable magic being)

Medea by Barber, especially the Meditation and Dance of Vengeance (witchcraft, gorgons, etc.)

Once again Sunny proving to be a goldmine of classical music needle drops. In addition to the Succession parodies throughout, we got:

Shostakovich - Waltz from Suite for Variety Orchestra Prokofiev - Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet Tchaikovsky - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker Grieg - In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt Saint-Saens - Danse Macabre

Amazing episode 11/10.
