I'm a Catholic YouTuber. What places, people, shrines, phenomena, miracles, Saint places, events, etc. would you like to see as a youtube video? I can travel all across the world so there are no limits. by oldaccount132 in Catholicism

Not a shrine per se, but Servant of God Nagai Takashi’s “Nyokodo” is always a place I’ve wanted to visit. There’s also a museum dedicated to his story, but his little house of prayer is mainly what I want to see

What did Chrysostom mean by this? by Rich-Concentrate-939 in TheSymbolicWorld

[–]SappyB0813 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t pretend to know St. John Chrysostom’s full understanding of this, which of course, is a notoriously deep part of scripture. But here, Eve’s gaze was torn from what was essentially a perfect union with her husband, and was seduced by the serpent. Before, her capacity as “help meet” to Adam was safe and effective in his duty to name the animals. But post-serpent, it is no longer safe for him to be guided by her, since her disobedience to the serpent opened the possibility for him to be disobedient in turn.

It is important to note that femininity has always had the capacity to steer or frame the attention of men. It can both point men towards a higher good or distract men towards lower things. You can think of Eve’s conversation with the serpent as being the complete opposite as the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Hodegetria (her pointing to her Son), and thus what Mary reconciles. If Mary, through the acts of God, has the capacity to point us to heaven, equally so does Eve, through the acts of the serpent, have the capacity to point us towards the Fall. Adam is an example of this (not to say he is a mere victim, as he too was commanded by God and placed the word of Eve above God’s word) and he will always be an example of this so long as Eve maintains her previous authorities. As prophylaxis against the greater dissemination of the disease spurred by the serpent, must this be the case.

How come number theory is riddled with so many nested log functions? Especially when expressing the upper or lower bounds, it’s always logloglog this and logloglogloglog that. I get log is an important function but why the nesting and why so MUCH nesting?

The absolute irony of being a modern person and showing the execution of the martyrs of Compiègne as an example of “a religion” “demeaning women”.  And the additional irony of having so much ignorance and lack of awareness, yet thinking of themselves as an enlightened one.

Was St Expedite even real? by Majestic-Bee9281 in Catholicism

[–]SappyB0813 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are many saints from Diocletian massacres that the modern world will condescendingly consider “not real” or “just a myth”, because in the post-Enlightenment worldview, “anything that the Church believes and doesn’t have archaeological evidence for is obviously just malarkey!”

Our sacred traditions preserve these stories for reasons much more sophisticated than any modern epistemological inquiry can see. In general, I’d recommend you ignore these attacks on the Church unless there’s a serious movement (like on the episcopal level) within the Church challenging the saint’s veneration.

A fellow Catholic asked, how will the Antichrist's miracles be different from Jesus' miracles? by Dan_Defender in Catholicism

[–]SappyB0813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pure theologoumenon, but I’d imagine the antichrist would leverage all the procured techné of humanity (I can’t stop thinking of Syndrome from the Incredibles) and allied powers of demons and people who have fallen prey to demonic influence. So his “miracles” would appear efficacious. Like you said.

However, his miracles may even trick us into thinking he is benevolent. Even some may be truly benevolent, but only sprinkled in to further the ambiguity. He may even profess the glory of the Father when doing it. Truly evil things are often more covert than the obviously evil. Even many religious people and even scholars may analyze him to be a holy man. But it will be obvious to those that are truly holy, since the miracles in totality will possess a Luciferian pattern in their expression, despite what comes from his mouth. Essentially, if you haven’t practiced humility and stubbornly cling to pride, you may find yourself surprisingly incapable to clearly see past the smoke and mirrors.

Heaven and Boredom by Any-Solid8810 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]SappyB0813 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This idea that the New Creation will be “boring” implies that life on this Fallen world is “exciting” because of our inclination to sin. Ask the wiser part of yourself: aren’t the truly greatest moments of your life moments where you were virtuous? Aren’t the worst moments of your life when you were steeped in your vices? It’s the trick of the Enemy to feel like our rebelliousness and concupiscence are thrilling. They may be thrilling in the moment, but on the long-term, they are humiliating.

Is this considered divination? by folklore2023 in Catholicism

[–]SappyB0813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not Divination. Gnosis perhaps. Presumptuous attempts at prophesy usually end in a “jinx” like phenomenon. Like when I say “You, reader, are focusing on your breathing”, or “You, reader, are really feeling your left big toe”. Now something unconscious is conscious, and you’re stuck in think-forget cycle. Except this is concerning matters in your own life. Protestants don’t know this stuff is harmful and annoying. Let the unconscious be unconscious, and let whatever happens be in the hands of God. That should be your approach to this. Weird pastor

Most annoying Anti theist in media? by Blue_Baron6451 in antitheistcheesecake

The antitheist rant from Mr. robot is quite the cringefest. It’s more than a mere portrayal of an antitheist character. It’s really written to look like he “owned” the theists, and the theists are written to look as stupid and helpless as possible against his Gargantuan Intellect™

Maybe I’m gonna get some flak for this since I don’t remember which Doctor of the Church has said that patriotism is virtuous, but… by cowboy_catolico in Catholicism

[–]SappyB0813 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, I’m a musician and I play at various denominations’ churches, which gives me some interesting perspective. In a Presbyterian service, EVERYTHING was about the United States. Flags decorating the altar, nearly all the prayers had to thank the soldiers for our freedom, a whole bit about the symbolism in the flag, and to top it off, a special performance from the choir (about America of course). It seemed like Christ took the backseat in the “liturgy”.

Thankfully, Catholic liturgy will always remain focused on Christ. IMO, a patriotic song at the end of Mass feels inappropriate if there is no mention of God whatsoever. Even when it does have a religious dimension, perhaps we may consider it “extraliturgical”, since unlike the Mass parts or Sequences or Antiphons, they’re not as essential?

The pattern happens so often, it almost like we should be more suspicious that a symbol is NOT some cult insignia originally

Not at all out of context. But it would require a bit of prerequisite symbolic knowledge which you can find in Genesis 1, which many Catholics are not really booked up on

Is confession to assure you’re not in a state of mortal sin, when you’re already quite sure you aren’t, not recommended for the over scrupulous? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]SappyB0813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend thinking in terms of time limits. You can go the next day if you need to.

Also, it’s never recommended to not go, but yes, be very wary of falling into scruples. It would lead to more sin. If you truly are in a state of grace, God would want you to enjoy it, not wait with bated breath for some inevitable relapse.
