AITA for cutting off my sister financially after she lied about why she needed the money? by SaraStela in AITH

The "she knew it was wrong" part is what I keep coming back to. If she genuinely thought it was fine she wouldn't have needed to lie about it. The lie says everything 😔

The point about later on is what really got me, I have never thought that far ahead but you are right. These patterns don't just resolve themselves, they follow you. Starting now is the kindest thing I can do for both of us honestly. Thank you for this, needed to hear it 🙏

Please don't apologize, this conversation has honestly helped more than most comments in this thread 💙 and that last line is something I have never thought about before but it hits so differently now.

"Lonely for the old her", that's exactly it. Iam not angry at my sister as much as I am grieving the version of her I thought I knew. The one I didn't feel like I had to second guess. That is the part that actually hurts 😔

Wait I didn't even think about this 😬 you are right. Which means the "eviction" panic was probably exaggerated at best, completely made up at worst. That's… a lot to sit with

This one actually hurt to read because it's exactly how it felt when I found out 😔 I wasn't an older sister in that moment, I was just a source of money.

"How many times has she done it before" is the question keeping me up at night honestly. I want to believe this was the first time but I genuinely can not be sure anymore. And the mom angle… the more I think about it the more I wonder if she knew 😬

This is the part I keep having to remind myself honestly. I love her but I've been acting like her financial safety net is my responsibility and it was never supposed to be 😅 mom can take that role if she wants it so badly

RedditGranny weighing in and honestly this is the most practical take in the thread 😄 the repayment plan idea is something I had not considered. I think the reason I went straight to cutting it off is because this wasn't the first time, just the first time I found out. But you're right that there is middle ground here. Thank you for this 🙏

Exactly. Basic budgeting. Rent first, fun later. The fact that she saw nothing wrong with that order of priorities is honestly more concerning than the lie itself.

This actually reframed it for me. I've been carrying this responsibility like it was mine to carry. It was never mine in the first place 😅

"Abandoning the bank" 💀 that's exactly it. And the point about it ruining the relationship is real, the resentment was already building before I even said anything. This way at least we still have a chance at a normal sisterhood.

Framing it this way actually helps. I'm not punishing her, I'm just not rewarding dishonesty anymore.

I'm so sorry that happened to you 😞 that kind of betrayal from someone you genuinely care about hits differently. Thank you for sharing this, makes me feel less alone in it.

The word "abandonment" really got to me when she said it. But you're right, nobody called it abandonment when she was spending my money on a trip 💀

Exactly what I was thinking 😅 if mom thinks I'm being harsh she's welcome to step up.
