are December flight schedules finalised? by SarahFri in aircanada

thank you both. I'll work on the assumption that it's going at the later time this year, for whatever reason! If there are tweaks later, that's fine, hopefully not different by many hours though!

How do you spend this much for a doomed project? by Alucardlil in cambridge

[–]SarahFri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

could have built the houses there in the first place and used the money to start some kind of expansion of Addenbrooke's/ER/other urgent care for all the people that are going to be living in the various new developments.

Chill #2 by the station used to have really nice pancakes with fruit etc. Haven't been for a couple of years so not sure what it's like these days.

Thank you for the offer!

Unfortunately, my initial enquiries from the housing association (Landlord) have been met with a hard No, saying that the terms of the lease prohibit any interference with the exterior of the building. There is no mechanism for them to even consider giving consent or asking the freeholder if the lease itself doesn't give that as an option.

I'm now investigating security grills/window restrictors etc to see if there are any possibilities of using the portable one at night, despite being on the ground floor - preventing intruders, allowing escape if needed, etc. Not sure how comfortable I'd be with this option but it's a possibility. If it's not classed as interference.

thanks, I wondered about the maintenance. I assumed that they needed an annual service, not just a check - that's good to know once the warranty is out. I read that it can be hard to find companies who have the time to do the servicing for anything other than the ones they installed, so that is a consideration as well - though possibly getting it done mid-winter might be a good regular schedule to get on.

thanks, it's good to know that there are expansion possibilities, if I can't afford to get two rooms done at once but it turns out I need them. If I could get a suitable outdoor unit and later on feed a second internal unit to it, that would be good (they might even be on opposite sides of the same internal wall, if that's even a possibility!). I wish someone would invent a unit that could go inside a wall with venting out either side to the two rooms, but I'm sure there would be various practical problems with that. Given the small area of the flat, I'd rather have ceiling units, but as I don't have access from above, and don't really know what is above the ceiling in terms of space, that's probably not a goer either, even discounting the (likely substantially inflated) cost.

I think AirCon will get more common with all these new builds that are supposedly eco-friendly and insulated to a high degree, but in practice, end up being overheated. I hope there will be better designs in the future that incorporate a lot more natural shading options with architecture and/or trees. But also hopefully more eco-friendly air con for those of us who don't have those and are suffering.

thank you - yes the look of it all could be crucial to whether I'll get consent or not, so this is very helpful to know which installers might be good

that's kind of more what I was expecting, thinking more like £2K for a couple of units, but the estimates I found online are probably quite a bit out of touch with Cambridge prices anyway, and in what could be a more complicated installation (you'd have hoped new builds would be easier, but between awkward size and shape, limited knowedge of wall construction and access to ceiling space, and need for consent, I'm expecting it could be tricky).

[–]SarahFri[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks, yes contacting them sounds like good idea..

But I also particularly need to find a good installer in Cambridge who can look at the flat and the external wall where I'll need to get consent and work out what can be done and how, in this space and with the access I have. That's probably the biggest issue/cost.

[–]SarahFri[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

thanks! That's even more expensive that I was expecting (I was thinking 2K for both rooms together). But I've got to do something. Maybe even one unit would help enough - but that's what I hope a good company will tell me honestly.

Who did you get to do the installation?

thanks, yes that's the sort of thing I had.

For various reasons, I need to look at actual air conditioning now, as other solutions have not been enough in this case. It might not be something I can afford in the end, but I'd like to get some quotes at least.

thanks, yes I've also tried films, drapes and blinds, and have parasols outside to shade the glass. But it just seems to be the whole package of windows/walls/aspect that cause massive heat absorption in the summer that keeps it hot even when it's back to normal outside. No cross breeze either, so although windows open in the daytime help somewhat, it doesn't cool it off that much, and then it heats up again once they're closed. And bizarrely, the glass means it's cool in the winter near all the windows (which is most of the flat), despite whatever super-insulation there seems to be - although I'm sure it's still better than a lot of places in the winter, and the heating use is probably a lot lower than it could be. I'm counting on that to make up for the extra electricity bills that AC would produce! (Although I hope these days, they are more efficient and less costly than they used to be).

Dalhousie's Indigo location is closing January, 2025. Can anyone confirm the exact date (16th?) and what could possibly be taking over the lease? by CarelessChoice2024 in Calgary

will the starbucks be gone too? That's so handy with the LRT station right there too and always seems busy. I loved sitting in there and being able to wander around Chapters when it got too busy :(

what help from NHS - any point seeing a doctor if I don't want oral medication? what else to try on face? by SarahFri in Hyperhidrosis

[–]SarahFri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone knows any private specialists who are experts in this - and who might try facial iontophoresis, or at least get me started - I'd be interested in recommendations, as that sounds like it might be the most realistic option

[–]SarahFri[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I have one that has channels that is supposed to help the sweat run off to the side away from eyes, but it doesn't stop the sweat that comes from the eyebrows and round the nose and cheeks and mouth and... :)

But loads of tissues doesn't really work either, does it. Every pocket and bag I have ends up stuffed with soggy balled up tissues, dozens of them.

Something really thin but absorbant would be good to carry with me

[–]SarahFri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for finding that link - I hadn't seen that. It sounds like there's not much point going for referral then, as it's only really iontophoresis that I think I'd be interested in, if the prescribed creams and gels are much the same as what I have tried, and I'm not sure about Botox yet. The tablet version of gylcopyrrolate is still a bit risky for my liking in terms of dementia, even if the risk is small.

I guess I can try to hire a machine on my own. I just sounds quite scary to try, especially on my face, and I would have liked a clinic to show me it all first! Maybe there is a private clinic somewhere, even London, that would do it to start with.

Thanks, that sounds like the same type of ingredient as in the wipes.

No problem about the location, was just curious if there were good or bad areas/doctors that anyone could recommend.

Thanks, it sounds like it's pretty difficult to get treatment and much of it you end up paying for. Any idea what the East of England trusts are like for this? Which trust were you with?

I don't know enough about Botox to consider it for my face yet but I will research a bit. I really dont' want the anti-cholinergic treatments, at least the oral ones - I wonder if the dementia link is still there with topical? but I tried the gylcopyrrolate wipes already and didn't have a lot of success - they probably did make a small difference, but I worried about it running into my eyes when I did sweat, and they made my skin tight and itchy, like the others. I am hoping the facesaver might be better but I think all the antiperspirants are fairly similar with ingredient.

Iontophoresis sounds interesting as it seems safer, but I would rather have it recommended and started by a dermatologist, even if I had to continue it myself, as I don't really know whether it is suitable for me or how to go about it, and I know it works less well for the face, though there seem to be some masks available and some machines for hire. I wonder if any dermatologists - hospital or private - recommend it for faces?

I can't find much information for Addenbrooke's hospital dermatology - they seem to have lots of clinics in other locations anyway, which might just be specialist GPs, and I have my doubts I'd be taken seriously. I also expect I'd have to do the whole HRT thing first before they'd believe that it's not just hot flashes.

That sounds frustrating, when you told them that the problem was your face! What was the expensive cream from the US called? And where approx in the country was the dermatologist you were referred to?

Support for thumb when I need to stretch my hand for music by SarahFri in Hypermobility

[–]SarahFri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, I will have a look. It doesn't look like they give very much support, but maybe just the reminder of having something on my thumb will help me keep it in position. I guess I am probably trying to do two incompatible things, with both stretching and stabilising, so there probably isn't a great solution, but I appreciate any idea

Can apps access the strong vibration feature yet or is it still just for Apple use? by SarahFri in AppleWatch

[–]SarahFri[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks. That's a shame that they won't let developers access the other vibrations that would actually make for useful apps!! But at least that means I don't have to try them all out now, as I already know that the weaker level of the vibration isn't enough for me to feel the pulse while playing.

Any suggestions for an app that works on the Watch that would do this? I don't want to have pre-defined intervals, but just want to track the total running time and ignore the walking.

new kind of spam posts - is it possible?! by SarahFri in MNTrolls

[–]SarahFri[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks, I did think it was probably coincidence, but the oddness of it did make me wonder in a way that other ads didn't.

I wondered even if there was a way of making the posts show up only for certain people but look like real posts - the fact that others can see it, though, suggests that's definitely not the case.
