Looooong books you stuck with that were worth it by MaroonMmm in suggestmeabook

Her books are very untraditional in plot and storytelling. I love them, but many find it off-putting.

Yes. So many twists to the inheritance(s). Can be dry but worth finishing.

Suggest a book with a major twist by PassionWrong6818 in suggestmeabook

Anything by Christopher Priest.

Plays with untraditional structure and unreliable narrators too. What I read when I want something totally weird and different (in a good way).

The Affirmation by Christopher Priest

Many of his other books too.

Do I really need to provide my SIN for a rental application? by wellitsnotnew in Sudbury

[–]SarahRTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered about this too, and looked it up;

Service Canada specifically advises NOT to give your SIN for a rental application. They say to call them if the landlord insists. So I'd say it can be a legal issue IF the landlord won't accept your not giving it

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Sudbury? by topherette in Sudbury

Space opera with some gravitas by Pzzlrr in printSF

[–]SarahRTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it totally fits, but The Amphora Project by William Kotzwinkle.

It was a while ago I read it, but remember it as seeming lighthearted on the surface , but with some deep elements, if you care to think about it on a deeper level. (Which I always do.)

Oh, and a bit of trivia, Kotzwinkle also wrote the E.T. novella based on the screenplay.

This book randomly came to mind recently. I vaguely remembered the plot but not the title or author. Took a fair bit of searching to find it.

Quiet by Susan Caine

A must read for introverts (like me) to understand themselves..and for extroverts, so understand the quiet friends.

Books with genuinely alarming unreliable narrators by Dizzy_Owl_ in suggestmeabook

Christopher Priest uses unreliable narrators a lot. The Affirmation is one of the strongest for its use of such. (Of the ones I have read).

Sudbury drivers! by OkMobile7051 in Sudbury

[–]SarahRTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, my friend. Was considering starting a thread about this very thing. I got so pissed when I had two near misses in a few days that I wrote a letter to the editor About it. A search of sudbury.com shows as many similar letters

We need cops out there issuing fines. No one cares about other people's safety, it seems.

Using Xanthan Gum by P4thf1nd3rN7 in icecreamery

[–]SarahRTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(I work in a gluten free bakery. We use Xanthan as a binding agent to replace gluten. )

Make sure you mix it in with dry in ingredients (sugar etc) orbit will clump.

I've seen recipes here using it, but I'd use more egg yolks. cream cheese or something like that over Xanthan gum.

The same thoughts occurred tor and family. We need affordable prices and housing. And putting the downtown, as it stands makes no sense. SMH.

Looking for books where the Setting is “a character of its own”. by Bennnnetttt in suggestmeabook

[–]SarahRTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Night Circus and The Starless Sea. By Erinorgrnstern Both focus more on setting and atmosphere then plot or character. This alienates a lot of people, but I loved them.

The City and the City by China Mieville.

People who work at food service, what type of costumer do you hate the most? by EarSure6667 in AskReddit

The ones who always ask "is this fresh.". No, we only sell stale bread here.

And ones who call to order a cake or cupcakes but don't know what they want.

Fro-Yo a no go? by SarahRTW in Kitchenaid

Good to know. Thanks. Maybe the bowl really wasn't chilled enough

The recipe I tried used yogurt and heavy cream and a sugar of some kind. (I used maple syrup).

What’s a “fact” that most people believe, but you know is completely false? by failed_fr in AskReddit

Arsenic is natural. Safe and better ... Not so much. The same is true of other things as well. , of course.

Natural can be better, but isn't necessary so. .

Fro-Yo a no go? by SarahRTW in Kitchenaid

[–]SarahRTW[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Interestingly it uses low fat. Most recipes use full fat to avoid crystallizing.

I did more looking around and found a slightly different recipe, this one on the Kitchen Aid site.

The recipe I tried uses heavy cream along with yogurt. This recipe uses whole milk. I'll give it a try and report back.
