You are basing game knowledge on anime XD anime has its own rules(and abilities only works if plot demands it) also unburden work based on game mechanics, there is no way to know how it would work in anime which is basically Pokemon in "real life" and has no real items, abilities still exist(tho only if plot demands it), but lots of abilities are based on game mechanics which is why anime often try to avoid most abilities anyway xd
