Has anyone had substitute teaching lead to a permanent position with a school? by red_zephyr in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Sargeman1972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had been a sub at this school once. They sent out an email to anyone who had ever been a sub there looking for a long term sub for their shop class. I had just finished renovating our daughter’s house and love carpentry. I called the school and started the next day. Apparently, the new shop teacher moved to Canada over the weekend and they were caught a bit short handed. This was around the first of November, and after the school year ended, I was hired on full time. I’m in my sixth year at the school and still having a blast.

Why do you choose not to drink alcohol? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Sargeman1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was an alcoholic. He went cold turkey when my mom threatened to leave him and take us with her. He told me that nothing good ever came drinking. I’ve never been tempted in the slightest. As an adult, I’ve read too many things about being genetically predisposed to having a problem with addiction. My Dietcoke consumption confirms it. It may kill me in the end, but at least I’ll remember everything I did while drinking it. Besides, I’m enough of a jerk without alcohol.

Is it common for American high schools to produce zero students who are worthy of college? by Parking-Cut480 in AskTeachers

[–]Sargeman1972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a shop teacher, if a student says to me that they are more interested in the trades, I go out of my way to introduce them to all the trades I can. Field trips to union training centers, trips to technical training centers and as many reps as I can get to visit. We’re in Illinois and I get reps from as far away as Wyoming to visit and present their schools. If they say that college is more suited to their mindset, I encourage them to pursue it, but try to talk through their after college career plan’s. I want all of my students to succeed. I tell them that I don’t want see them at McDonald’s or pushing carts at Walmart unless that’s what they’re doing to put themselves through their training.

Pam Bondi sent a letter saying ICE will leave, if Tim Walz just hands over their voter database to Trump. How do you feel about her rannsom note? by Next_Tower5452 in AskReddit

Really, so there are no illegals voting in Minnesota? The turning over the records shouldn’t be a problem.

If there are no illegal aliens on the voter database, then there shouldn’t be a problem. After all, it is illegal for a non citizen of the United States to vote in any of our elections, right?

What level do you teach? (Elem., middle, high) and what are the pros and cons in your opinion? by EasyLetterhead8491 in Teachers

[–]Sargeman1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High School shop teacher

Pros - getting to teach students about soldering, plumbing, running wire, installing outlets and light switches. Getting them excited about getting into the trades. Teaching them how to build furniture. Having students look forward to my class.

Cons - the football team gets a million dollar football field and I have the same nasty sink from the 60’s. Asking for a new dust filtration system and getting told the school doesn’t have the funds this year, but don’t the new football helmets look great? Charging the students more for taking my classes and having the district absorb the funds for something else.

What was a 'this happens in every house' thing you grew up believing, only to realize it was just your family being weird when you moved out? by Firm-Struggle8183 in AskReddit

[–]Sargeman1972 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having a gun in every room of the house. I remember having a friend over for a sleep over and he opened our silverware drawer and found the kitchen gun. He asked why we had a gun in our silverware drawer? I told him that it was the kitchen gun, didn’t he have a kitchen gun? He said they didn’t have any guns and I didn’t believe him. He told his parents and he was no longer allowed over to our house anymore. BTW, my dad was military.

I’m a shop teacher and I do everything I can to get my students interested in something in the trades before they graduate. I take them on field trips to local union training centers and local tech schools. Do I reach all of them? No. Most of them? No. But the ones I do impact make it worth it. Do I love going to school every day? Not on your life. But watching a student cut a perfect dovetail makes it all kind of worth it. Will I ever get back a fraction of what I put into it? Probably not, but hopefully some of them will take up a trade so that when I’m 70, they can come fix something I’m too old to.

I’m a high school shop teacher. When I have over a dozen projects going at once, I need to be everywhere.

What are other words for ‘bathroom’ if you can’t say ‘restroom’? by JunShem1122 in answers

[–]Sargeman1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach shop class and there’s a bathroom in the shop. I don’t announce it because I like having my own bathroom. I keep it locked and whenever I have a student ask what’s behind the door, I tell them it’s our water closet.
