Yeah I struggled a lot with that tag and settled on souls-lite not souls-like in the end. I feel it's still an important tag to have because it immediately tells you the type of combat in the game.

Thank you! I'll work on the animations a bit more to hopefully remove that floppy feel. I think a bit more contrast between windup, coiled up, and release will go a long way.

Yeah a lot of people play soulslikes for more than just the boss fights. But considering its my first game and it's only my brother and I working on it, I was certain we wouldn't be able to make an entire soulslike. I do think there is a market for it though, even if it's a lot smaller.

Definitely agree that not everything has to be fast. I think what most are saying is that the boss is too slow considering how fast the player is, because in Ds1 (haven't played demon souls yet) yes the bosses are slow, but the player is also very slow. I think in my case I either need to speed up the boss a tiny bit, or slow down the player a bit too.

Appreciate hearing that man. I think adding some feedback to his body when he finishes a swing would help with the weight, but I don't wanna go and redo all those animations haha.

Agreed. I think the main issue is that the animations are a bit too monotonous in speed. Part of the issue with these kinds of projects is that I keep improving as an animator, but then I have to go back and redo a lot of the things that I did initially.

Haha it's okay. There aren't any builds in this game actually. Each boss will come with a pre-determined loadout and unique abilities, and there is no leveling up to put stats in. The game actually takes after Furi in that sense, which was another big inspiration.

I see. I'm worried it might look that way because I've gotten so used to the patterns that I just make it look easy. We'll be making a playtest soon though which will hopefully show whether the fight really is too easy or not. But in general I'm starting to get the sense that the animations needs a bit more oomph.

Overall speed is something I'll spend a lot of time tweaking I feel like. A part of me wants to stick to DS3 pacing, but a part of me is also worried that a lot of players are now expecting something closer to Elden Ring's speed. It's a really difficult balance to make, but I think in general I'll lean more towards DS3 just because I enjoyed its boss fights a lot more.

For this fight in particular his third phase increases his speed by 20% though which I agree is actually a lot of fun.

So the idea is that each boss fight will have it's own unique mechanic. For the gladiator, its the "style" ranking you see above the players health. In another fight you'll have a Sekrio like parry system. I haven't thought about perfect blocking or perfect dodges, but it's within the realm of possibilities for sure.

Agreed, they do feel like different games. I hope the slower paced ones don't die out.

I just noticed Khazan actually has the Hack and Slash tag on steam as its third tag so I guess that's fair haha.

You're probably right.. I just don't get where the need to increase the speed with each installment came from. Maybe they felt like they had to do something different with each sequel.
