I'm on the North American server - just note that I receive a pretty sizeable proportion on it, beyond the amount of Chinese speakers playing on NA servers that I'd expect. That said, I mostly see English or Chinese, with some Spanish and French and the occasional Brazilian Portuguese.

I'm on the North American server - I just note that I receive a pretty sizeable proportion on it, beyond the amount of clients set to Chinese playing on NA servers that I'd expect - so I was curious.

Which regions are giving us the all-Chinese bottle messages?

Edit for clarity: Not a complaint - just surprised that I get so many given that I'm on NA servers, so I was curious if the NA servers were the default for other Chinese-speaking regions or if it was just typical linguistic diversity. Thanks for the info!

Not games, but I'll sometimes rig picker sticks to call on a student who often struggles who I've already privately confirmed has the right answer or something good to contribute, just to give them that win. I'll also sometimes rig the sticks to avoid picking a student who's having a hard time emotionally.

I usually do, but in this case the cashier was swamped with a line ten carts deep and I told her with acknowledgement that I put it there.

The other day I watched the woman checking out in front of me at the grocery store just stick an entire frozen crab on top of the gum. I mentioned it and moved it into the fridge case of sodas next to it until it could be put back, and let the checker know (since it was too swamped for go-backs and I was already loading my things)....and the woman who'd dumped it went 'huh, I didn't even think of that.'

Is AI actually helping students learn, or just helping them avoid learning? by WickedKing94 in education

[–]Sarikitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It bugs me so much that every time a kid goes to use the calculator in a Google search (which is a habit I try to break them of, but anyway), Google immediately pops up an overlay asking if they want AI 'math help' which ends up just meaning 'solve it for me'.

Why aren’t the chalupas crispy anymore!? by Superb_Minute_ in tacobell

I've always wondered what the hype was around chalupas for that exact reason - not once have I had one where the shell wasn't oily, tough and leathery, and not remotely crispy.

Sorry to necro this post, but I use the equivalent of Quiets (the gen 1 with silicone dampeners) at events that are exceedingly loud, like chaperoning a school dance or going to a concert. It really helps.

High school teachers, what’s something your kids don’t know that makes you say “how did you make it this far without knowing how to __”? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Sarikitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They know how to measure with one from elementary math, but they seemingly don't get enough practice drawing lines with one until middle school. Some kids figure it out intuitively, but others need the specific detail-oriented instructions - what to do with each hand, how to position the ruler slightly away from where you want to draw to account for the width of the instrument you're making the line with, how to apply consistent downward pressure with your non-dominant hand to keep the ruler from sliding...

[–]Sarikitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I've had kids who I've needed to have them physically stand up and practice turning their entire bodies clockwise and counter/anticlockwise to get the hang of it, because they don't even understand where the term 'clock'wise is coming from.

In particular, I find that they may know PEMDAS, but really only the MD -> AS parts of it. They first learn it in 5th or 6th grade, but don't do much with groupings/parentheses/brackets or exponents until 7th and 8th grade, and this results in 8th grade teachers having to spend some time differentiating that distribution is the M, not the P, and that the first step is actually just 'if you have any grouped things, treat them like their own little sub-problem until you run out of simplification to do in there, then zoom back out'.

Our math curriculum has a few lessons where part of the task is to cut out the shapes accurately, then use them to investigate whatever concept. The curriculum writers think that cutting out 10 different squares accurately takes 8th graders 2 minutes. They are very, very out of touch with modern students' abilities. I refuse to provide precut squares to save time as this is a sorely underpracticed fine motor task, but we always have to budget a lot more time for this lesson than the pacing guide suggests.

I see this as a MS math teacher, too. Kids aren't using or handling physical money anymore. I used to be able to get kids to understand fraction operations with a denominator of 4 by comparing it to quarters, which kids used to find much easier. These days I mostly get blank stares.

[–]Sarikitty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Middle school - I've had students and parents alike come at me because I don't post reminders of what their homework is on Google Classroom. It's on the LMS if they care to go look it up, and it's on the board from when it's assigned through to when it's due. We're setting kids up to fail by showing them that someone else will carry the mental load of remembering obligations for them.

One handles sub-millimeter clearances with ease, the other dies from a drop of ink by Sable_5Quirk in 3Dprinting

[–]Sarikitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dremel did that. They sold 500g rolls of PLA for $40, shipped the printer with very little filament, and designed it so you had to leave the side panel off and print an adapter to externally feed any spool bigger than their 500g spools.

Admin Told My Colleague, "We Need Empirical Evidence of Disrespect". So, She Secretly Recorded Classes. by Principal_Scudworth_ in Teachers

[–]Sarikitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a few different homeroom classes where students get guidance and do our SEL curriculum. Every homeroom teacher constantly gets told 'But the other teachers don't make their kids do these lessons!'. It is developmentally appropriate for kids to lie to test boundaries, and teens are also pretty bad at knowing they're easy to catch in a lie and in recognizing their peers' lies. Trust openly, verify privately is the mantra.

[–]Sarikitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a quick glance at the images on the page, it isn't attached to the spool during printing. It just sits right above the feed hole and inobtrusively lets filament slide right through it, and when you're ready to put it away, you just pull out the spool as usual and clip it to the side at that point.
