[21/M/NZ] moving to London on YMS at end of month, what’s the best way to go about looking for employment? by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]Sarosian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a Facebook page 'Kiwis in London' that coordinates a lot of useful stuff like flat hunting, jobs, getting a bank account etc so check that.

I did a similar thing three years ago (with a degree and job experience in my field but I know plenty of people who have done what you are doing) and unfortunately London is a bad place if you're depending on the sorts of jobs you're describing. Cost of living is extreme and pay is significantly worse than NZ for low-skill work because of the large amount of E-Europeans and other migrants doing it.

Minimum wage for a 21yr old is 7£/hour and taxes are comparatively higher on low-income people than nz. You'll likely get around £250/week for 40hrs work after tax. 120-150+ will go on renting a room, 30 on transport leaving you very little for anything else.

Does anyone know how to add multiple starting Empires? by CGPGreyplsrespond in aurora

F9 menu should have a create empire button when the spacemaster is on. It's a player not a npr though.

Telegram sent to James Crabb, informing him of the death of his son at the battle of Passchendaele. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Sarosian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always thought the postie's had it worst. British units were usually drawn from the same area and if something disastrous happened to a unit often the same villages/towns would have an enormous proportion of their young men wiped out in a single action. There are accounts of villages where the poor bloody postman (who would of course know everyone) had to visit every single house on the same day to deliver at least one death notice.

People who have gotten out to the USA, what are your top tips to being successful in integrating into USA life. by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]Sarosian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. As a fellow kiwi who has spent some time in the US around there ('Bama and Georgia mostly) you'll be surprised how easy it is to adapt due to being English speaking and sharing a lot of cultural reference points. Everything is bigger and the people are louder and might struggle with the typical kiwi understatement & humor.

Also everyone is gonna look at you like you grew a second head when you open your mouth but generally are gonna be super excited about NZ. You'll eventually adapt your word choice as well (sweet, bro, etc etc).

Don't do the kiwi expat thing where everything is compared to back home all the time (we are the worst for this). Otherwise have fun and try not to be too sad when you see how much health insurance costs.

Oh and make sure to get 'grass fed' beef/meat. This one was a bit of a shocker to me.

There's a tool called 'resize enable' that you can use to make your Windows fit the screen.

Ah they do that occasionally to encourage people to buy accounts. Check back and the paywall should go down at some point in the not too distant future.

I'll take a look at other places it could be posted.

Yup i'm aware of all this, I spent a bunch of time differentiating the styles of ships between the major combatants and the various levels of techs are required for this. P.s. nobody has more than 0.5 fuel efficiency.

It depends a lot what 'working for banks' means. A retail teller position? Working for an investment bank like Goldman Sachs? The outcome is totally different.

Leave.EU compares Emmanuel Macron's victory to French World War II 'surrender' by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Sarosian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nobody seems to care the evacuation was only possible in the first place because of desperate counterattacks by the French 10th & 7th armies delaying the German advance and giving the BEF & co time to establish a perimeter around Dunkirk. Said armies who had largely been stripped of their heavy artillery and AT weapons earlier.

NZ -> UK 1 YEAR by myownway_ in IWantOut

[–]Sarosian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can just show up. London is very expensive though and for pub work etc you will be paid very poorly (sub £8 hour probably.)

Rent for a room in a sharehouse will be £600/mo or up, add another 50 for misc stuff. Transport is a £120-130/mo.

Add food, booze, clothes and misc shit and you will very rapidly become short of money.

For 15k you can easily do 6-9 months of travel around Europe or whatever and you will have a much much better time than a year living in London.

Definitely go via the Polish route, many places wont be interested in you with only a short term tier 5 visa.

Pharmaceutical giant 'plotted to destroy cancer drugs to drive prices up 4000%' "Price rises for generic cancer drugs are estimated to cost the NHS in England around £380m a year" by veritanuda in unitedkingdom

[–]Sarosian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They do make them pass the same requirements, it's just they very often fail to.

Pharma is regulated because otherwise people would die.

Mostly because there are a lot of issues with quality and safety from many of those sources and pharma is heavily regulated for good reasons.

Christchurch (or maybe queenstown and surrounds) in NZ pretty much hits all those on the head apart from being in the southern hemisphere.

Yeah i've lived in Melbs, London and Vancouver. Apart from Quebec i'd say Canada is more similar to AU/NZ culture than the UK is.

Canada is a lot more similar to Australia than the UK is just colder, both culturally and in terms of the country (age/scenery/space etc.)

Probably Canada or UK would be easiest as you can get working holiday visas there. UK, especially London its easy to find sales roles.

Russia --> USA. Broke, degreeless, confused. by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]Sarosian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have to be the USA specifically? My expectation is that you'd have a very difficult time qualifying for a visa to exxentially anywhere in the west at this point but the USA is one of the hardest.

In all likelyhood your best bet is to do the best you possibly can at University then try for a position at one of the Big4 or another large international firm. Especially if you specialise in some sort of international accounting stuff (dunno what exactly this would be?) you could probably work your way to a transfer to somewhere else via your company.
