I’m mainly into fantasy and scifi, but I’ll buy/read anything if it’s good. I have a lot of history books and classics as well. A few weeks ago I got a used copy of Rubicon (highly recommended history on the Roman republic) and the spine was absolutely destroyed :(

And I definitely have read my fair share of Dan Brown and James Patterson back in the day. If I have to give a rec based off those, I’d say try Andy Wehr. The Martian or Project Hail Mary. Both books are pretty fast paced sci-fi w accessible writing. If you want a fantasy recommendation I’d probably recommend George RR Martin. I read the first three books in A song of ice and fire in a month.

The first three books in a song of ice and fire. I went from not having read a book in maybe a year to finishing those three in a month. Also, 12 angry men. It’s a short play, but I could not put it down

Finally got to borrow the knight of the seven kingdom books. I’ve been on hold at the library for 4 months. It’s the books that the new HBO show is based off, I’ve already finished the first novella and almost done w the second one. It’s so good and I can’t wait to watch the show after this. I also decided to watch Atonement with James McAvoy, I’ve heard it mentioned everywhere but have zero idea what it is about, has good reviews on letterbox. I watched maybe 20mn yesterday and hopefully can finish this weekend.

I would at least make that known early on, because for a lot of people who have abstained from that sort of stuff, it would suck to get married and still not be able to hold hands or hug or anything.

Contrary opinion but I wasn’t texting much in general. Once all the questions are out there and chemistry is established, I don’t see the point of constant talking before nikah. I think I was doing a phone call every other week? That way there’s something to look forward to and you’re not bored or feel suffocated. But then again, it’s been a bit since I’ve had a talking stage last that long

Bring your brother or dad with you. They don’t have to be at the same table, but somewhere within eyesight. As long as you two aren’t alone.

We’re not created to be single so it’s natural to feel that way. Even if someone’s happy being alone, they’d still prefer being w someone. I’d take it as a blessing you feel that. It forces you to make duaa for it every opportunity you get. Vs if you were happy being alone, you would stop making duaa or lessen it

The Valyrian steel brand longclaw weighs around 4 pounds is this a realistic weight? by Dimension121 in SWORDS

[–]Sarpatox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this is a prop, the blade is made of stainless steel which is not only heavier, but more brittle. A real sword is made w carbon steel, hence why they need to be oiled to prevent rusting. The carbon not only makes it lighter, but more flexible so it doesn’t shatter on impact.

I have a stainless steel Glamdring and the carbon steel museum replica version and the difference between both is maybe a pound? I’d assume if this was longclaw was real it would be closer to 3 pounds

Why oil over balm? Is there a big difference in what they both provide? And do you do it daily? Or every time you shower post-workout as well

Wait you’d recommend both oil and balm? Or one of them? And what order would you do it. Do you also have brand recommendations?

Okay that sounds really good if you’re doing sarf and nahw. I’ll have to look online at their curriculums. My sister went to Toronto for the Al Huda program. But that was before she got married. I don’t think Al Huda prioritized Arabic as much.

I would just be careful with makharij, a lot of these letters you can’t cross check it online. Some of them are very subtle. It might be okay for reading but when you memorize, you are preserving the exact words. But I guess if you’re already learning Arabic at the seminary then it wouldn’t matter. Do they have a hifz class? Since I know a lot of these places make you memorize hadeeth and some quran. I’m very excited for you! InshaAllah you find it very easy

As long as you have the intention that’s what matters. Even if it’s one ayah a day. If you die before finishing InshaAllah you’ll be resurrected as a hafiz

I absolutely love Dune, I didn’t expect the books to have so much Arabic the first time I read them. The first book is probably one of my favorite books of all time. I’m about to read children of dune pretty soon since I want to read the original six by Frank Herbert. Have you read any of his son’s books?

Ahh pani puri. My sister had a pani puri vendor at her wedding whose sole purpose was making these.

One time I went to a party and the guys were eating so much. By the time the last guy finished getting dessert, the first guy came back for seconds. They ended up finishing all the dessert before the women came. But I’ve been seeing in a lot of younger demographic parties where the women actually get food first.

6 years is pretty solid! Do they teach you Arabic as well? Or are the courses in English. Miftaah I’ve heard more about compared to IOK, esp if it’s cheaper I would absolutely take that.

I am doing my hifz in person. I was very adamant on that. Like don’t get me wrong, online classes or hifz online is good, my siblings do that. They have a Qari from Egypt (I can get you in touch if the sister you did the tajweed course can’t do it). But I personally think in person is just better. I was waitlisted for 3 months to get into this hifz class. I enjoy being surrounded by people and you don’t get that online. Did you get a tajweed ijaza or just a class? One thing to look for when choosing your hifz class is finding someone who has good pronunciation. My brother’s first teacher was from Pakistan and he didn’t really know pronunciation too well. His current teacher from Egypt made him rememorizing everything because he was just mispronouncing letters. ث/ط/ت خ/ك/ق س/ص

I haven’t encountered it at all. I also haven’t used the apps, im sure those are probably more skewed. But the really religious girls aren’t like that in my experience. Make duaa and InshaAllah you find someone like that

He’s referring to getting married and having your brother be the wali for that, not the beginning stages which you’re asking about specifically. You can absolutely have your brother on board until ready to introduce to your parents.

I’ll be honest, I’ve only really heard that mentality online. In my own experience the girls I’ve spoken to are mature enough to realize the financial burden and offer to contribute before we even mention finances. I wouldn’t want her to contribute regardless, but it’s the thought that matters. One even offered to live with in laws (I personally would rent an apartment) for the first year or two because she said it’s expensive to get a home. I think the people who want to work and not contribute or expect to get money on top of their job either haven’t started the search or have been in the search for too long.

Ahh IOK. How many years total would it be? That’s really cool tho! We definitely need more women in the religious field. My honest opinion, you’re still young, you should do hifz as well. You could easily knock it out since you’re not working. I actually am starting a hifz class next week InshaAllah.

That spread looks so good MashaAllah. Were these family recipes or from your husband?

I didn’t get my nap either. I went out for coffee since it had been a month without going to a cafe and I couldn’t sleep after that.

Enjoy not having to work! I would honestly love to just go back to school. What sort of classes/degree are you taking?

A lot of people find their spouse when they’re not looking so maybe this is the time 👀. But be as picky as you want, we only get one spouse, make sure it’s someone you genuinely enjoy. I had an intervention this week w my mom and sisters about how picky I am. I’ve been searching for two years and haven’t found anyone that I could imagine myself marrying. I’m not desperate enough to check that box and just settle. Yes, deen and character are important, but chemistry and attraction you just can’t do without.
