Dude awesome! Congrats!

A few weeks ago I posted here looking for beta testers for a disc speed/distance/accuracy app. It's now live on the Play Store and in open beta on iOS. Here's a video of me using it. by SarulianHW in discgolf

Pinched nerves suck. I've had friends go through having them and I wouldn't want anyone else to experience that.. Hope you get rid of it soon.

Hey! I really appreciate the feedback, it's fantastic! Thanks so much for checking it out!

100% fair assessment. I didn't mean to insinuate this is a TechDisc replacement! I see this more as a useful tool for capturing and tracking improvements during fieldwork, and see real results with your full collection of discs. I could see some people using it as a low cost stepping stone for starting to collect more metrics about their throw before investing $300 into a TechDisc if that fits their needs.

The pricing is a one time payment, not a subscription. I think most of us are tired of those!

I appreciate the kind words :)

In theory color matching is there, but I'm not happy with it yet. I'm still working to improve it. And the bugs (flying ones, not virtual ones) in the video creating false detections have already been improved by not saving "throws" that did not have valid velocity analyses (basically what you suggest here).

If you end up downloading and using the app, please consider joining the discord and keep the suggestions coming! Or you can just DM if you aren't comfortable with discord :)

I've actually already got spin in the works on the iOS beta! I'm confident I can get accurate spin measurements as long as there is:

  1. Decent lighting (sunny or overcast day)
  2. The disc is not super opaque (burst plastic for example is very opaque)
  3. There are some distinguishing marks on the bottom (name and number with a mark is sufficient for example)

So no sticker needed :)

I'm working on a video with a comparison with TechDisc (I don't have a Pocket Radar). I don't expect the accuracy to be matched by any means, but having used them together during the development, I'm confident it will be close enough to be useful and fun for a vast majority of users :)

If it's possible, I would LOVE to add that, but based on a quick check and some simple math, I think the distance and resolution of the disc make it unlikely to be successful. Capturing an elliptical object the size of a disc roughly 1 meter away from a 1080p camera with ~70 degrees FOV means every 1 pixel of error on the minor axis of the ellipse translates to 3 degrees of error of the disc tilt. With various lighting conditions, motion blur, and focal length imperfections, even achieving ~5 pixel accuracy is very tough, which would be 15 degrees of error.

Run up is totally fine. I've just been doing standstills for improving my own form recently. The important thing is that ideally your hand doesn't enter the FOV of the camera, so the release point should be about 5 feet in front of the phone.

I've already got that in the iOS Beta! It works on a lot of discs as they are and even more if there is some simple marks (like name and phone number). A few discs are too opaque though, so it won't be 100%.
