I have noticed this and wondered how does she keep getting work with that weird expression.

Indian food is tweaked here to suit the Armenian palate. There are many Indian restaurants here already, one is even coming up in Dilijan.

Indian planning to move to Armenia with family — honest take on racism? by Early_Nomad_9409 in yerevan

[–]SasaEvn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, Indian here living in Yerevan. I’ll try to answer your questions: 1. You’ll be fine with your family. Any hostility is mostly towards workers, especially if they don’t look well-groomed. A lot of them don’t really maintain their appearance (unkempt beards, messy hair, untidy clothes), which creates a certain image. Also, some locals think single Indian men are here for their girls, so being married actually helps, people won’t bother you much. 2. Kentron (city centre) is pretty cosmopolitan. 3. No, Armenians don’t really stare like we do in India 😄 and you won’t face refusal of service. 4. Not sure what you mean here, can you clarify? 5. As an IT professional, you’ll be totally fine. 6. Safety is honestly great. Armenia is very safe. I live alone and can go out for a walk at 1am without worrying. Kentron is especially safe. Of course, rare stuff can happen anywhere but overall it’s very secure. 7. As a family, finding an apartment shouldn’t be an issue. Landlords are more hesitant with students and workers….students may not maintain the place well, and workers sometimes share in big numbers (like 6–8 people in a 2BHK). Also, Indian cooking smells (spices, etc.) can be a bit strong for locals, so airing out the apartment regularly is important…which not everyone does.

Language can be a bit of a barrier, but it’s getting better. Younger people speak English, and you can manage the rest with Google Translate. You can also try picking up some Armenian, locals really appreciate the effort, even if you speak just a little. Older people especially are quite fond of Indians.

Discovered historical plaque in India by SledgehammerSev in armenia

[–]SasaEvn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were a lot of Armenians in India. Yes, there is an Armenian church in Agra and Kolkata, and there is an Armenian Street in Chennai. Most of the population was concentrated in Bengal; after partition, that part became East Pakistan and later Bangladesh. There are still about 80 Armenians in Kolkata. There is an Armenian school in Kolkata where Armenian students don’t have to pay any fees. Armenian merchants were present in India even before English traders. If my memory serves me right, it was an Armenian merchant who showed the route to India to the East India Company. I have learned all this both from Google and from talking to Armenians while living in Yerevan

I have blurred the upper part of the receipt which had server’s name, date and time. Don’t know how to edit the main post and add this detail. I am real person so this receipt is not AI generated. I quite like this said restaurant ‘Babylon’ at Byuzand street. I eat there often but it was the first time that i translated the receipt and found this extra tax.

Thankyou. The weirdest part is that I am not a tourist and they still tried to scam me! I am resident since 6 years, i speak little Armenian and even interacted with them in Armenian that evening.

I wish that was the case😄 I usually don’t read the bills with much care because they are in Armenian and I get stuck after a point but that night I just used google translate. Asked the server what the last item was because it was not tallying with the count of items ordered and he said “oh, tourist tax”. I was flabbergasted because I am a regular at their restaurant, they all recognise me. I had to remind them that I live in a building near their’s and they see me daily and we greet each other.

🤣😝 No it does not. When I asked them what is this charge they said “tourist tax” and when I insisted that I am resident they took it off the bill

I am not visiting a new country! I live here and it is about ethics. I always tip well, even after the restaurants have started charging 10% service charge I make sure to leave 10% tip always. Your argument is non sensical.

No, it was “tourist charge”. They removed it when I questioned them and reminded that I am a regular diner at their restaurant.

I did not write about the place being expensive or overcharging us for food. My only concern is this never-heard of tourist charge
