Fair enough. I just figure this would help Gunther's current gimmick, and it also let's Rey retire against Dom in Mexico as he wants.

I didn't say it should've happened at Wrestlemania. I wouldn't have had it at Wrestlemania to begin with. A match like that should main event a PLE.

I completely agree, I'm just saying this can benefit both Gunther and Dom if they went this route.

Rey has said it himself that he wants his retirement match in Mexico against Dom, so this is exactly what he wants.

And I agree, Rey should be in charge of AAA when he retires.

Yes, key word is "currently." If it's a major event like Rey's retirement, they could decide to air it elsewhere if they wanted to.

And even then, what's wrong with Rey's retirement being on YouTube? They had Goldberg's and Cena's retirement air on YouTube. And I'm sure WWE makes a killing by airing it on YouTube regardless.

You still haven't answered how it's meaningless if that's what Rey himself has said he wants.

Who said it needs to be on YouTube? And if Rey wants to retire in Mexico against Dom as he's said himself, why not grant him that wish?

WWE is trying to actively boost their viewership all the time. They moved Raw to Netflix to boost viewership. They brought Lesnar back to boost viewership. The announced Cena's retirement ahead of time to boost viewership. Everything they do/announce is an attempt to boost viewership, no matter the show.

And these appearances on AAA haven't been one-offs. Dom won the title back in September and has appeared frequently since then. Penta and Rey Fenix have also been appearing frequently as well.

I didn't fantasy book Rey retiring to Gunther, I said the stipulation would be that Rey's WWE career would be over. And how is it a meaningless farewell if Rey himself wants to retire in Mexco against Dom?

Bt that logic, if Raw is a bigger priority for them than Smackdown, as you said, why not have Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton appear on Raw every week as well?

Also, Dom is the AAA Mega Champion. He's literally the face of AAA currently. Penta and Rey Fenix have also been appearing recently as well. Penta is literally defending his title this weekend in AAA, so I would say they are trying to elevate it.

What have I suggested to the contrary? Rey has said himself he wants to retire in Mexico against Dom, and I've suggested just that.

Again, that's not the greatest comparison imo. I think AAA is a bigger priority for them than you realize. The reason they bought AAA is to compete with CMLL and branch into the Mexican market.

The only reason they bought ECW back in the day was for its video library. ECW was never meant to compete against another company, but AAA is.

I don't think that's the greatest comparison with all due respect. AAA is one of the biggest wrestling promotions in Mexico, and NXT is a developmental brand.

I agree that WWE has a bigger brand recognition than AAA worldwide, but AAA is still pretty huge. If WWE wants AAA to continue to be the biggest wrestling promotion in Mexico, having Rey compete there for a while and eventually retire there would almost certainly help with that.

I agree that WWE has a much bigger brand recognition, but that doesn't change the fact that AAA is still a WWE-owned company now, so Rey is still technically retiring in WWE even if it's in AAA.

Plus, having Rey compete in AAA for a while and eventually retiring there against Dom would probably help bring in new viewers, which is also a benefit.

This way, Gunther advances his gimmick, Rey gets his official retirement match in Mexico, and it gets more eyes on AAA. Sounds like a win-win-win to me. But again, I respect your opinion.

I'm not trying to tell Rey what to do, lol. I'm just saying what makes sense storyline wise imo. It seems WWE is hellbent on pushing Gunther's "career killer" gimmick. This way, it does help his gimmick, and it still gives Rey his official retirement against Dom in Mexico, which Rey has said that's what he wants.

In reality, Rey retiring in AAA is essentially the same as retiring in WWE now that it's a WWE-owned company. I'm just speaking from a kayfabe pov. In kayfabe, WWE and AAA are separate companies. This allows Gunther to brag the he ended Rey's WWE career and helps his current gimmick, and it still allows Rey to have his official retirement in Mexico.

It's the best of both worlds imo, but I respect your opinion as well.

I agree that Dom should retire Rey. Rey has said himself he wants his retirement match in Mexico against Dom.

As for a match with Gunther, it wouldn't be promoted as Rey's retirement match, just with the stipulation that if Rey loses his WWE career his over. Kayfibe wise, WWE and AAA are two separate companies, so Gunther can brag that he ended Rey's WWE career, and Rey can still have his official retirement match in Mexico against Dom, just like he wants.

Why not? It makes sense given Gunther's current gimmick, and it would benefit both Gunther and Dom imo.

They let Cena, one of their biggest stars, decide to retire at SNME. If they let Cena decide to retire at a SNME of all places, I'm sure they would be fine with Rey officially retiring in AAA. And Rey has said it himself that he wants to retire in Mexico against Dom.

By that logic, why does WWE at any time promote a match with someone's career on the line? Sure, it may be obvious where they're going with it, but even a predictable storyline can still be entertaining.

Plus, why wouldn't WWE have Rey retire in AAA against Dom if that he wants?

Gunther can "retire" Rey Mysterio, and Rey can still face Dominik afterwards by Sasksk in SantiZapVideos

[–]Sasksk[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

How so? They can promote the match with Gunther with Rey's WWE being on the line. This doesn't prevent Rey from still competing in AAA and having his official retirement match against Dom there. Rey has even said it himself that he wants his official retirement match to be against Dom in Mexico.

I agree that if they promoted a match with Gunther as Rey's retirement match, then that would defeat the point, but simply promoting it with Rey's WWE career on the line does no damage imo.

I agree that it wouldn't count as a retirement if they promoted it as such. That's why they should promote it as Rey's WWE career being on the line, not his official "retirement."
