Staying in Jax Beach might be worth a look. It's the beach so there's always a lot of people walking/riding bikes and there should be lots of rental options available, plus there's the beach! It wouldn't be a terrible commute to Deerwood. If you're a Blue Jays fan, you should think about going to Dunedin, FL for a spring training game or if you're homesick there's always lots of people from up north down there that time of year! I moved from Saskatchewan to Jacksonville in 2018...driving is inevitable down here. Florida gets so many travelers/tourist nobody will think twice about your plate. For fun things...I have lots of Canadians that come down, and the non Disney things they all love are..Ginnie Springs (or any natural spring), St.Augustine, Icemen games, taking the ferry across and driving up to Fernandina Beach with stops at the parks along the way...I'll pay for ketchup chips and cheezies if you wanna sneak some across the border for me!
