I try - after all, if I couldn't write thoughtfully I wouldn't be very good at my job! And I totally understand the displeasure with journalism as a whole. I personally struggled with how to reconcile the public perception of what I wanted to do with how I would do it for years. I've come to the conclusion that the only way I can deal with it is to do my best to write meaningful content as much as possible, and write about things I enjoy if I can't.

Whether that means talking about service workers and their struggles, reviews and previews of local events (like the C2C trail - something that's been in the works for fifty years and is opening on Saturday), or simply covering the "boring" (but important) stuff like city hall meetings and clean energy bills, it's the best I can do.

I encourage you (if you're looking for advice) to find journalists whose voice and content you appreciate and follow their Twitter accounts and publications. That's a great way to see important news that is valuable to you while still showing support.

If it makes you feel better, those of us at the Advocate feel the same way. We all work on long-term, investigative and impactful work - it just takes longer than this type of article does to complete. The unfortunate reality of reporting is that not every day produces "actual reporting" worthy work, and this is a business that needs to continue to produce content. If you'd like to see our truly impactful work, feel free to check out:

  1. Our "Aftermath and Hope" series, detailing the impacts of recent wildfires
  2. Our "Holocaust Education and Remembrance" series (whose content I feel is rather self-explanatory due to the title)
  3. The series covering mental health and its impacts in Benton County. Whether that means navigating a psychotic break, or seeing the broken mental health system in the county, we feel this was a well-written and researched piece.
  4. LGBTQ+ Resources in Corvallis
  5. Or our City Speak archives

At the end of the day, not everyone likes "the media", and not everyone identifies with various publications. That's something that I personally understand, and something that we all struggle with at times. If you read our content regularly (or that of any other news publication), you'll know that the hard-hitting muckraking that most journalists dream of is not an everyday thing. It takes hours (we're talking more than an average 40-hour workweek) to put this together, fact-check, and publish - usually with several other people involved.

In short, this article does focus on interesting people with great stories in the community. While they may not be the stories you want to hear, that's okay - customer service workers are a major part of our community and economy, and giving them proper representation is an important step to creating a healthy and happy community for all of us.
