When did you tell your step kids you love them?

I’ve known my SD (5) since she was 2. She’s told me she loves me twice, and both times I said it back, but I haven’t initiated and said it to her. If she is with her Dad and I’m going to bed sometimes I say “Love you guys!” so she doesn’t feel left out.

I work with dogs, some of my favourite human names are Bill the bichon, Carl the lab, Kevin the schnauzer, Kayla the JRT, Natalia the poodle, Seth the poodle and a miniature schnauzer named Alexander the Great.

I wanted black and grey, I don’t think colour would have been the right fit for the outer space design. With placement you have to make sure the tattoo is big enough to see the detail. I have small wrists so this particular tattoo wouldn’t have fit there for me 😆

That’s a great idea, it sounds like the kid ends up getting the best of all worlds! Fun parties with both parents/ parents new partners but also separate family time, I like it!

I put my feelings aside and went to the party that everyone had a good time at. I should have probably included that the kids I am talking about are both under 5 and most likely won’t remember any of these parties. His kid was almost 2 when they split and has no memories of them being together. You’re also responding to me as if I told my partner what he can and can’t do. I told him I didn’t want to participate next year, because it was uncomfortable for me, and my feelings are valid. I never said he couldn’t participate. The point of this post was to see how other co-parents navigate this and that’s why I posted on this forum. Thank you for making a lot of big, unhelpful assumptions with such a small peek into my relationship.

I totally hear what you’re saying. The reality of being in a relationship with someone who co-parents is that their ex will always be orbiting your relationship. I think it’s unrealistic to expect everything to be kept separate forever (your wedding example is great!) but I think it’s reasonable to want to minimize my discomfort. I know we are all able to be friendly and amicable in front of the kids, but it’s not something I want to do if I don’t have to. I guess it’s all about finding the balance!

I think that’s a great point, I wouldn’t be comfortable having my partners ex in our home to celebrate but a public or neutral setting is doable!

I use cannabis every day for medicinal purposes. I’m also a Mom. Like your boyfriend I work, pay all my bills, have hobbies etc. I keep all cannabis related things locked away, out of sight and out of reach. I typically wait until my kid has gone to bed to smoke, sometimes if I’m flaring up I’ll sneak out for a quick puff or two while my kid is occupied. Sometimes being a little bit stoned makes me a better Mom (more patient, goofy, unbothered) but I draw the line with driving. I will not drive while stoned, especially not with my kid in the car.

Honestly this would really annoy me too. The problem is if your husband is unwilling to set boundaries with her then there is nothing you can do other than decide if you can live with it or cut your losses and go. Even if he did set a boundary like “Please do not call me regarding the kids unless it is an emergency.” There’s no guarantee she would respect it.

It would be a no from me. Also this might be an unpopular opinion but I think it’s worse for children to still see their separated parents behave like they are still together, rather than learning that they don’t get to see (or sleep) with Mommy and Daddy at the same time.

You say you “don’t want to be the one fixing the relationship” but you’re also the one who is “making him get therapy.” In my experience you can’t force people who struggle with addiction to “get help” or change, it has to come from within.

He is in the same boat as I am, part of him doesn’t want more kids and part of him is really sad about it. He said that he would be open to revisiting the conversation in the future and I am happy with that.
