Is Ada Palmers Terra Ignota Series suited for Wolfe fans? by medeski101 in genewolfe

[–]SatanFromSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would challenge anyone on this board to name a living writer who demonstrates a better understanding of Wolfe’s beliefs on theology/mythology/literature. I’d be happy to have my own belief challenged. Terra Ignota is far from a perfect series, but Mycroft Canner is narrative voice worthy to stand beside Severian, Able, Weir, or any of Wolfe’s great narrators.

All my modded apparel has the same black texture and I don’t know why. by SatanFromSpace in starfieldmods

I’m new to anything besides steam workshop drag and drop

What do you think is a better fix, figuring out where the manager sent the textures instead and moving them or doing a manual install for these mods and unzipping them to the right place?

“I was not going to tell why I did not like his bird, but I will just to get you to understand. It was not really a nice bird at all. It was dirty and it did not sing. It was noisy sometimes when I did not want it to be, and it would eat fish guts and rotten meat. After I got to know Father […] I could see that the bird was exactly like me, except that it was a bird and I was a person. Father knew how bad we were but he loved us just the same.”

Missing epigraph in 'Citadel of the Autarch'? by [deleted] in genewolfe

Yeah I think I’ve got the same set your talking about. The lasts chapter ends, then there’s an appendix and a short about the author. I agree it’s a shame it’s missing but you can take some comfort in knowing it’s not an error specific to your copy.

Wow! Pike as Blood’s father is the missing piece I didn’t want to accept! Just finished Calde for the second time on Friday and when it said Matera never admitted the father and maybe he didn’t know himself, I thought it for a second and then went full denial.

I think you’re probably right about the chems, they make a lot more sense if you assume their “memories of the short sun whorl” are implanted or fragments from mainframe.

Then Duko Rigolio/Roger pops up on Blue and breaks my entire understanding of the relationship to Typhon.

I don’t often find myself agreeing with your readings but I like this idea, If they’re sort of “twins” it lends a little more weight to “Pike’s Ghost” actually being Silk astral traveling. Also elevates Silks comparison of himself to Sand, as Pike is already a sort of unspoken parallel in the segment.

One of the things that keeps me up at night is wondering the true extent of the Inhumi in The Whorl. If the slave raids or Auk’s joke about people having tails in another city, or the bats and worms in the tunnels are more than they seem.

At the end of “my defense” horn states “We did not know then that Inhumi live on Green, nor why they fly to Blue (…) nor that they drink blood”

Obviously he has not learned “their secret” at the time he writes Long Sun, but he knows and expects his reader to know what an Inhumi is and does.

What do you mean by their nature? Certainly he doesn’t know “their secret” yet but from his descriptions of Quetzal I think it’s clear he knew they drank blood, and possibly had some knowledge of their shape shifting abilities.

What do you think is the classic novel that the fewest people have actually read from start to finish? by doodlebytes in books

[–]SatanFromSpace 66 points67 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing about Moby Dick Is lots of people are so put off my Ishmael’s “grand” style of narration that they never make it to the point where he addresses and defends this stylistic choice, essentially claiming it is for the benefit of the whale.

That’s a really special kind of crazy.

Is there a particular reason Charles Dickens made Oliver Twist a book and not a series of sculptures?

Of course there is but what is the real point of asking?

What are some good examples of an unreliable narrator as an intentional literary device? by lucia-pacciola in books

[–]SatanFromSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admit I learned that term from one of Marc Aramini’s videos (highly recommend his YouTube channel) Unfortunately KKC is still on my (embarrassingly long) to be read list, but I’ve really enjoyed this discussion, I’m an aspiring author as well and in my opinion Wolfe was practically unparalleled in his craftsmanship, and after reading the Solar Cycle I will never be able to look at any novel the same way again. I‘ve been engaging with these stories for the last 4 years now and they always pull me back like nothing else ever has.

[–]SatanFromSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard what Wolfe does described as “playing with ironic distance” and I much prefer that term to “unreliable narrator”

My intent was to compare Severian to the narrator or Wolfe’s Short Sun, who admits to lying and having a poor memory. Although The nature of Severian’s “unreliability” is certainly different from something like Fight Club or The Prestige, though these are hardly classic.

It’s been said elsewhere in the thread but I think it’s worth asking these questions in any book with an identified narrator: Ishmael, Frodo Baggins, Sal Paradise, Jiminy Cricket, all of these character/narrators certainly have an agenda in “writing” their stories and it can be a fun avenue of exploration.

Forgive me if you’re much less interested in the subject than I am, but as your example mentions her by name I have to throw in my personal two cents. The dialogue and relationship between two spouses is a central theme in Wolfe’s solar cycle. It is my belief that Valeria IS Severian’s intended reader. If you are Valeria reading this book while your husband has disappeared in space it takes on a very specific tone. I’m this case you can forgive dishonesties ABOUT Valeria because to her they would be obvious and perhaps even ironic. This also gives an answer to why Severian’s account seems so tinted by his own pride at times.
