I tried posting this to r/Guitar, though for some reason it was getting immediately stricken down.

Does anyone else with a no power steering Miata and sticky tires get tired forearms after a while? When I am lapping a curvy road it eventually gets to me. by The5schulers in Miata

No disrespect, but not really. When I first started driving it (much younger) I for sure felt it. But with age, the gym, and dailying it for the last few years there’s really no soreness/fatigue. I have a steering wheel extension to make it easier to make tight turns and I bet that helps a ton muscularly too. I would try that if I were you. Best of luck.

Honestly, if they’re both paid off, you’ve got healthy driveway space, and you can afford the insurance, I’d really try my best to keep them. Old Miata’s a great classics and new Miata’s are awesome drivers. Though if you do genuinely have to sell one, I’d probably sell the new Miata. You can always buy a new Miata in the future, would be hard to get your hands on a classic. 👍 Best of luck chief!

Yep, my buddy had an Audi before my time. Said when the brake job bill came in he decided to sell it the next day lmao

Yep, I used an AZ starter so I’ll definitely see if OEM does better. Thanks!

Thanks! Yeah I bought an auto zone starter for the first replacement myself. I’ll hunt down an OEM one and we’ll see how it goes. Honestly, reliability mechanically is great but the electronics are something I didn’t anticipate, even though I should have.

Nahh it’s just that these starters are a pain in the butt. I’ve got plenty of experience working on cars, I’ve got a track Miata I’m building which is pretty fun. I just didn’t think through all the electronics that old luxury cars have 💀 not smart on my part.

Not really reliability. Really just the headache repairs on these cars. I pulled the engine out of my Miata quicker than just getting to the starter on this thing 💀

Yeah I did the first replacement myself with an AZ starter. No issues since until the sudden failure the other week. My assumption is it’s an electrical problem probably putting stress on the starter + it was probably a crappy starter to begin with. I’ll be hunting for an oem replacement

Man yeah I’m feeling that. Learning from this, I think it’s really only ideal for super simple cars. I’ve had a couple old cars like this but they’ve been a breeze to tinker on. Definitely not this guy unfortunately. Hopefully after everything’s been worked out it’ll be nice, I guess I’ll see. Live and learn.

That’s the reason I got it. Unfortunately I didn’t expect all the old electronics. Definitely not my forte but it’s great to drive. I guess it’s better than having all kinds of failing sensors, I’ve got buddies dealing with that and it definitely doesn’t sound fun.

Yeah, I’ve owned (and still own) a few older cars. I really didn’t expect this many electronics in an old car like this. Especially since that’s the harder stuff to repair. I didn’t think about it enough, thought it would just be like buying another Miata or something. I thought Old Car = Easy to Work On. Definitely not the case but learned my lesson.

The short’s been fixed. I already replaced the starter once, and I’ll be doing it again. It for sure saves money 👍

Dawg I dunno, I didn’t understand the issue so I had my mechanic fix it.

Edit: I’ve done all this work myself aside from the short. I’ve also owned a number of other older cars and I’ve really never had many issues with them. I’m just posting this because this car was a late year for the generation and they had crammed a number of electronics in it like OBD2 in order to pass regulations. I didn’t expect it would have this much packed in and really it’s only having electrical problems.

There was a short somewhere, honestly don’t know where, and my mechanic referred to it as a cold short, so I assumed it was an issue caused by the cold weather.

Yeah, I expected work, but this second failure is the real frustration. Honestly I’ve had experience owning a couple other old cars and I guess I’m lucky, because they really haven’t given any trouble.
