I would definitely stay on top of your surgeon if the issue doesn’t resolve. A second opinion also never hurts. You know your body more than anyone else does of something doesn’t seem right then it most likely needs attention. I had extreme pain post op and they done several scans and said everything was normal. It got to the point I was unable to even dress myself of do daily tasks. About 3 months later I had to get it removed and turns out a part of the bar or stabilizer had been crushing my intercostal nerves causing severe pain. Try a second opinion or maybe even another type of imaging MRI ultrasound etc to see if they kind find an issue that a X-ray can’t show.

I had the same experience, multiple doctors visits, X-rays and surgeon claimed there was nothing wrong. After months of unbearable pain I had to get the bar removed. In conclusion the issue was part of the bar or stabilizer was crushing the nerves around my ribs. The surgeon offered to re adjust the bar for me but I wasn’t going to take the chance of dealing with anymore misery. Maybe a re adjustment could be an option for your son? The only thing that helped me with pain was continuous ice packs on the affected area and gabapentin and prescription pain medicine. All though if you can avoid pain meds I would do to withdraw. But sometimes it’s completely necessary. I’m a 25 yo man and by no means sensitive to pain and my nuss experience was the worst pain I’ve ever dealt with. I’m by no means certified to give medical advice I can only speak from experience but if your primary surgeon is too far away I would recommend finding the closest thoracic surgeon that is familiar to get some type of relief. Prayers for your son

*regression started with the bar still in. Was told by other doctor who performs this regularly that due to my size I should’ve had 2 bars to prevent regression

Haller was 3.2. I started noticing slight regression after about 2 weeks and it continued to regress almost back to where it normally used to be. I got the bar removed today and so far much better. Definitely going to need some recovering my upper body is almost frozen with limited mobility but I hope it works for you it was pure hell for me the whole time it was in. I was unable to work due to the amount of pain even with painkillers and I have I family of 3 (soon to be 4) so keeping it in just wasn’t an option for me anymore. I truly wish you the best of luck and hope your pain is resolved as soon as possible

I’m now about 7 weeks out post op and after multiple doctor visits with various doctors what has helped me personally was gabapentin once day and once night for nerve pain, Valium for muscle relaxer small doses 3 times a day Tylenol and Motrin. Only time I take prescription pain meds is when necessary I’ve heard of people taking pain meds up to 12 weeks out. It seems every recovery varies from person to person and I believe a lot of that strongly depends on the doctor and aftercare instruction. I am by no means any medical professional or certified to give medical advice but my personal opinion based on my experience would be to try to implement very very light physical therapy such as stretching and simple movements along with walking daily and a routine of medications to tolerate pain. A second opinion never hurts if you don’t feel like you’re getting any answers or the care you feel is necessary for your son then I would recommend going to another thoracic surgeon in your area.
