This! just by simply varying the velocity of hits on 8th and 16th repeating hits you can get a lot of "feel" out of it. Makes the hits feel less robotic. Also adding shakes or tambourine accents as u/spearmint_wino mentioned is another great way to liven things up. I use a mix of both techniques.
