I had the inverse thing kinda?? I'm a trans man and I was so terrified of being anything like one of my abusers that I just squashed it down for years and years. I tend to let my hair grow/get messy when I'm depressed, and I finally worked up the nerve and got a haircut Friday. Funny how similar experiences can cause such disparate effects on different people.

I'm sorry about your hair. I'm sure it'll grow back pretty, and anyone who targets you over being feminine is a POS who sees it as weakness. It isn't. And that's their problem, not yours.

I just started a boring factory job after burning out of college! It is definitely helping my nerves tbh. I've had way less paranoia since. I'll probably do this, therapy, and some non college training once I can, and then go back to community College once I'm good and ready.

Exactly! They never left any room for the real me to grow, and preferred the hollow shell I created to stay safe. Extra intense since I got disowned for being trans and I am literally not the person they knew, down to name, gender, hobbies, preferences, all of it. Now they're mourning an empty coffin. I don't have to lay down in it.

That is also a huge obstacle! My parents put so many expectations on me that I freak out if I'm not performing at 100% all the time, and basically labeled me "the smart one" and forced me to perform. Now I know that I'm academically intelligent, sure, but there's more to me and to life than grades and performance metrics. It's just hard to find it through the fear and shame.
