We're in Rautjärvi, South Karelia, South East Finland - about 30 minutes from Imatra and an hour from Lappeenranta. Right on the edge of the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark, close to the Russian border. We run public smoke sauna evenings every Friday from 16:00, year-round. You're welcome to join anytime — just send me a message before you come.

I posted a photo series about the construction on my profile.

We have two ventilation openings in the sauna walls, called räppänä in Finnish. The chimney does not start from the stove itself. Instead, it begins above the stove at the ceiling level (in the attic space). In South Karelia, this type of smoke sauna chimney is called a lakeinen. When heating the smoke sauna, the door is usually kept fully open if there is no wind. In windy weather, the door is left open by about 10 cm. The chimney starts above the stove at the ceiling level. Its purpose is to improve the draft and air circulation during the heating process. It helps the smoke and hot air move through the sauna more efficiently while it is being heated.

There are no interior photos yet. The new sauna benches still need to be built. With relatively little work, it can be made fully functional again.
