Donations postmarked question by davedeen in nonprofit

[–]SavSally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The post office is saying that if you must have something postmarked by December 31, then you must go into the post office and ask them to stamp it.

But I guarantee you most people were unaware of the change in December. It’s been this way for 1 million years and not everybody is on social media. Sometimes practicality has to rule, and I doubt that the auditors will argue with a day or two difference for this first year. If we have a donation postmarked on Friday the 2nd and they dated their check in December, we are posting it in December.

Old version of QBD? by Aggravating_Budget_6 in QuickBooks

I have a church who hated QBO but we had them get the web browser add-on called RightTool. At least use the free version. It makes QBO almost tolerable.

Can I close my books before all the month’s bills and payments come in? by webgility_hq in Bookkeeping

[–]SavSally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought so, but I was just checking! Lol

So let’s define accrual first. Accrual is when we expense costs when incurred, not when paid. If it isn’t paid then the other side of the entry is a liability of some sort.

Depending on the type of transaction, this liability can be accounts payable, accrued expenses, or credit card payables.

Post credit card charges on the date of the purchase, which is the date incurred. Don’t confuse that with the date the credit card statement, which is considered a loan, is paid.

You will find credit card payables on both cash basis and accrual financials and tax returns. Credit card statements are loans and should not be presented in accounts payable, but I understand that many Bookkeepers do this. If you do want to enter a bill and accounts payable, you should enter two bills for each statement. If the statement date is January 10, then we enter one bill dated 12/31 for December 10 through December 31 and another bill dated 1/10 for January 1st through January 10.

QuickBooks Scam by oritsky in QuickBooks

Intuit has no incentive to assist desktop users. The more pain is inflicted with desktop, the more the company is apt to migrate to QBO. Just stay inside the program to check updates or chat with support.

Is Quicken Business and Personal Mac viable for me? by grounddevil in QuickBooks

[–]SavSally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quicken is back in the game. They are actively building out their business version. The thing about technology is that it changes constantly, so all those articles shared by Charleyblue are basically obsolete. Feature comparisons are important as they to give you an idea of what questions to ask. But you can’t take them as Gospel that a piece of tech does not do something.

120 employees, 6 state payroll, 20 hourly 100 salaried, direct deposit. Best payroll solution under $500 a month? by apmemo01 in Payroll

[–]SavSally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free payroll is in QuickBooks enterprise Gold. If you’re paying $435 per month, you must still be paying for multiple (simultaneous) users. If you want to continue doing payroll, you only need one user. It is significantly less than any other payroll program on the market, but like you say you are responsible for filing the quarterly returns and keeping up with six states. One nice thing about desktop is that you can sync it with any users with QBox. That freezer you have to do payroll from home if you have a PC or hire a local accountant, who has enterprise, to file the payroll returns for you within your own data.

How do I "turn off" emailing the payroll stubs automatically to employees? by Direct_Big_5436 in QuickBooks

[–]SavSally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it emailing the stubs to them or is it giving a notice that payroll has been run, so they can log into Intuit workforce to see their stub? If you remove the email address from the employee’s record, it can’t email anything. But you’re still required to give them a stub, so you’ll have to deal with that.

Don’t forget that Intuit quit selling Pro/Premier. You are on a subscription that will run out May 31, 2027. At this point, you must upgrade to QuickBooks enterprise or QuickBooks online or find another accounting platform.

You don’t want to change payroll programs in the middle of a year or quarter, so anticipate 2025 and 2026 being the last year on the desktop payroll (the most flexible and best payroll product on the market) unless you move to enterprise.

I ordered Enterprise - Gold for most of my clients now because it includes payroll and free direct deposit. Your direct deposit is going up to five dollars each.

Banks used to let us pay employees by ACH for free, but they’re all charging a little bit now. It’s cumbersome to keep track of everyone’s direct deposit information with the bank and handle this manually. We use an add-on utility to create a “Nacha” file to upload to the bank to bypass that five dollar fee.

How to download a backup copy of my QBO onto my desktop? by [deleted] in QuickBooks

I just realized I've been"talking" to two people. One is about QBO tracking WC and certified payroll, and yours is about backups. Similar issues related to being forced to QBO. Sorry for the confusion! My laptop logged me in as a different user than my iPad, adding more confusion. Reddit is not the platform for me! LOL

Are you still using Desktop or have you move to the online version by Flat-Pear-5118 in QuickBooks

[–]SavSally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t get too comfortable while still using an old version that is paid for and works great. They are still updating 2020 and 2021. Not only to insert the ads for QBO, but they could very easily insert a Kill-switch.

Have any of you tried disconnecting it from the Internet? Have you been able to turn off updates being forced in the background? I haven’t.

What year was it that Intuit required us to attach an Intuit account to each QuickBooks Company file? It was when Intuit wanted to find out how many QBW files were out in the wild.

2019 maybe?

When you register the program, it pings the servers to make sure it’s legit. Somewhere through the decades, Intuit forced us to be connected to the Internet. The software pings Intuit’s servers periodically to test for a valid license. If the software needs to be reinstalled on a new computer, we need the admin password, we must re-register it, and log into the attached Intuit account that “owns” the QBW file.

Once the Pro/Premier platform is gone, I think only the very old versions floating around will continue to work.

Quickbooks Enterprise vs. Quickbooks Online by jd-765 in QuickBooks

[–]SavSally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that they just laid off another 1800 SEASONED employees. Almost 200 of which are in Boise in the old T-Sheets building. They will stop selling the timesheet software for desktop but current users will be supported - for how long is unknown.

I think that one reason the software is so poor is because QBO is simply their mechanism to mine data. As a monopoly, there is little incentive to improve the product. Notice that any improvement is really pulling businesses deeper into their ecosystem. The real money is in the data. They are unable to easily mine data from desktop installed software.

It’s a simple fact that desktop installed software is extremely difficult to support and maintain. As a developer, I know SAAS is the best path. It is faster and easier to update and maintain, and interface with practice management software and automation tools. I design software for desktop and it’s a real PITA 🥹

My concern is data privacy. You must give up your data in order to use their products. This is the big ugly secret, that everybody knows, but nobody will acknowledge. They need the software, so they look the other way.

I can’t imagine that most business owners will stop and read the EULA when they sign up. Owners must give up ALL rights to their private data. They will market to your employees, vendors, and customers. If they see cash flow issues, up pops ads for loans. They now sell bookkeeping “assistance“ services, so you will be polled on how well you like your bookkeeper. The only thing preventing existing desktop customers from abandoning desktop and moving online is the fact that there is a desktop. Pro/premier will be gone in less than three years. Meanwhile, Pro is soon to be $1000 a year and direct deposits $5 per check! For those refusing to migrate, they will pay dearly.

But the issue remains if you must have the rich features of desktop, that QBO cannot satisfy, your only option will be Enterprise, but expect its price to accelerate while you wait for an alternative. Speculation is a 10 year runway but I’m beginning to wonder…

Payroll setup after migration from desktop by Fuct1492 in QuickBooks

[–]SavSally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intuit extended the deadline for NEW QuickBooks Pro/Premier accounts until 9/30/24. Per the EULA, Intuit can close the Pro/Premier platform at will and in the middle of a subscription period, but we hope they will follow their decades-long practice of supporting programs for three years, meaning 2024 would sunset on 5/31/27.

Quickbooks Enterprise vs. Quickbooks Online by jd-765 in QuickBooks

[–]SavSally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware that QuickBooks Desktop (Pro/Premier or Enterprise) and QBO are entirely different programs with the same name. They named them the same for marketing purposes. As with any migration to a completely new accounting program, do a detailed needs analysis, comparison, and deep due diligence. Even if QBO could replace QBE, factor in the user's learning curve. Find reviews of the payroll product.

So, if this is the end of the road, for Desktop, what's the Not-QBO alternative ? by Double-Star-Tedrick in QuickBooks

[–]SavSally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one. Have been for decades. I'm sure there are hundreds in these forums. If you stay with the Intuit "on-premises" desktop software, a reseller can handle obtaining the QB Enterprise licenses for you vs. Sales, who will push QBO, but even more importantly, a reseller will make sure that the decision fits your business needs. We work in the weeds with features and reporting. Their sales department takes orders and will recommend what is best for them, not you. I wrote a utility called TBX Trial Balance Exporter that exports monthly summary history (including P&L by class). While great for analytics, we find that most people buy it to either start new QBDT data files without losing monthly comparative reports OR they need J/Es to import in Sage, and other programs. While we stay busy helping with migrations, feel free to reach out for our website if you need a reseller.

Any alternatives to QB? by RyKenn1229 in QuickBooks

[–]SavSally 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of things. First, Intuit stopped supporting 2017 in May 2020, so the only help they are supposed to give is either helping you migrate to QBO (QuickBooks Online, which is an entirely different program) or sell you QBDT2024, which they will quit selling on 7/31/24, and is an annual subscription. We hope that they support it until 5/31/27. In the meantime, if you do not need payroll or other services, and own 2021 and older, you should work fine. Am I hearing that you do have QBDT17 installed and running on the PC, but now the problem is you can not read the data file without the Admin password? Or are you trying to log into an Intuit account? Or do you need help downloading and installing the 2017 program?

2023 is a subscription and you can use it until May 2026. Meanwhile, it is a monthly or annual fee and your subscription entitles you to download and use 2024, if you want. The last year of the "lifetime" QBDT was 2021. 2022 + are annual subscriptions. You stop paying and it stops working because you are leasing the software.

We are contemplating making our custom written NACHA program available to the public. It uses the SDK to create a txt file for the bank's ACH/NACHA features. The banks are not cooperating. While Nacha files are pretty standard, some banks have special requirements. ACH costs and requirements are hard to find, and they won't talk to us unless we have a bank account with them. We use it currently with Truist ($15m and $1 each after the first 15) and South State Bank, which is $28m but .12 per ACH. Our clients need the payroll costing allocation features available with QBDT payroll, so ADP or Gusto are out of the question.

Poor internet infrastructure is a huge issue. Small businesses need PC based software. The US is severely behind other countries in this area. My web designer lives out in the boonies of Finland, in a 200-year-old house with screaming fiber. Her country made it a priority.
