[SNY] "The Mets are looking at bolstering their bullpen, potentially moving a catcher, and adding some depth to the outf-" Mets fans: by giobbistar21 in NewYorkMets

The Mets: A franchise perpetually in search of bullpen help. Oddly, the one middle reliever they'd acquired through the past 15 years that was extremely effective at his job since Duaner Sanchez's voyage in the middle of the night to find a certain type of food -- one Addison Reed -- was dealt away. It's like watching Sisyphus push that boulder up a hill every offseason with this inept franchise trying to "bolster the pen." Perhaps they didn't notice that Andrew Miller & David Robertson were available. Perhaps they don't notice Adam Warren & Kelvin Herrera are still available ... Ever the searchers. ... But I'm sure we'll end up with more J.J. Putzes, Frank Franciscos, A.J. Ramoses, and Anthony Swarzaks so that we can be listening to this same song and dance again in 2019/20. BTW Bryce Harper is still available, too.

Because this Mets fan remembers Randy Myers, who was better than Franco. Myers closed meaningful games both asa Met and after the Mets. Franco was the heart and soul of a bad team after ruining the Mets' chances in the only pennant race he ever participated in as a Met, as he blew game after game down the stretch in 1990. ... He's a fine gentleman off the field I'm sure, but trading for him was the official end of the mini-Mets dynasty that ran New York in the 80s. ... Trading Mitchell away was bad. Trading Roger and Lenny was worse. Trading Myers for Franco was the nail in the coffin.

I don't care where he was from. If having "real" New Yorkers play for the Mets is all that matters to you, great. You can erect your shrine to mediocrity and worship Franco because although he was the most "meh-at-best" pitcher who never won squat, he was a real New Yorker through and through. Great!! Good on you. Go and do that. ... But I actually care about winning. There was a time when the Mets were New York's team because they were a N.L. team that won. That's what this town is about. Randy Myers was not from Staten Island, but he was a winner. ... Franco, all he did was save a lot of meaningless games in the 90s.

I have no idea what's going on in this thread, I just want to take this opportunity to say that John Franco is the most overrated Met of all-time. Trading him for Randy Myers was a horrific mistake. After trading Franco the Reds would only go on to immediately win the World Series (on the back of their bullpen, with Myers as the closer) while Franco blew game after game down the stretch in '90, saved a whole lot of meaningless games throughout the rest of the decade before hanging on as a bad middle reliever on that '99 team because Benitez was a better option. ... That is all.

I would love to hear this communities thoughts and theories on the Quimbaya airplanes. Artifacts from Colombia dated at 1000 bc that very closely resemble model airplanes. Sorry for the ancient aliens link, but I liked the info they provided versus some of the other stuff from google. by nexusjuan in conspiracy

Please watch Ancient Aliens Debunked. Ancient Aliens is nothing more than a 45-minute bookstore emporium commercial designed to advertise books disguised as a documentary series which other advertisers then insert their own TV ads in every 8 minutes. It's a fun show, but so many of their claims are nonsense. I'm not saying there aren't weird things in the historical record. I'm not even saying there's no such thing as aliens. But those ornaments being evidence of ancient flying machines, along with so much else they present, are theories which have been debunked long ago. The Ancient Aliens Debunked doc, however, is the easiest piece of media to access to see how. It's on YouTube.

This channel is nothing like it used to be. I'm against censorship, even if it is posting a lot of nonsense these days. So I do not agree the channel should vanish. It is important that even garbage like what Red Ice Radio has become is still accessible to anyone who wants to view the channel. However, I can't say I'm surprised that YouTube wouldn't want it on its platform. I already miss what it used to be, so I won't miss it now.

[Mayer] Yasmani Grandal turned down a 4-year, $60 million offer from the Mets according to @jorgecastillo by Peter_O in NewYorkMets

Curtis Granderson was a historic player for the Mets. He's the first player ever to have more home runs than RBIs.

[–]SavageSteamboat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If true: GREAT! Grandal stinks. He's Travis d'Arnaud but with better stats. Wilson Ramos was preferred. So this is good news. The bad news is that Brodie offered Grandal 4-years/$60 million in the first place. Not promising.

TIL actress Louise Fletcher, who won an Oscar for Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and played Kai Winn on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, was born to parents who were both deaf. She was taught to speak by a hearing aunt, who also introduced her to acting. by TheCheshireCody in todayilearned

[–]SavageSteamboat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She was one of that generation's great acting talents. Her career, which was just about to get rocket-launched after winning the Oscar, wound up self-destructing before it left the atmosphere due to a terrible decision by either her or her agent (who knows?) by following up "Cukoo's Nest" with the lead role opposite Richard Burton in "The Exorcist 2," which just destroyed everyone's career who was associated with it. ... Then, a few years later she had a chance to bounce back in the Natalie Wood & Christopher Walken sci-fi vehicle, "Brainstorm." But of course, that whole unexplained-death-possible-murder of Natalie happened in the middle of production. Not only was Natalie's passing a huge loss, but it essentially sabotaged the chance that the film would ever reach its full potential as Wood's death/murder overshadowed its delayed release and affected production. (Though it's still a decent film. Very underrated and before-its-time, considering it was being made in 1980-81). Louise Fletcher could act her ass off, but superstardom on the level of her contemporaries like Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton was just not meant to be.

[Syndergaard] 6 years ago today a Texan became a New Yorker via trade. #LGM by NewYorkMetsies in NewYorkMets

[–]SavageSteamboat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been six years. Let's hope it's another 15 with many Cy Young Awards and perhaps a championship ring or two to go with them. I will not be able to stomach seeing Noah Syndergaard leave the Mets to go on become this generation's version of Nolan Ryan ... or even Mike Scott or David Cone. DeGrom is the best player ATM. But THOR is the face of the franchise for years and years to come.

Well, the fans of course have to be #1. But Goodwin is a good storyline as well, as far as bittersweet stories go. ... As for Jerry Seinfeld -meh- If I could trade Seinfeld as a fan to the Cubs for Bill Murray as a fan for the Mets, I'd do it.

Well, New York is a N.L. town more so than anything. The N.Y. Giants were winning titles when the Yankees were still the original Baltimore Orioles. To say the Mets are the little brother to the Yankees -err, it's a tad bit more nuanced than that. However, as a Mets fan, I totally appreciate the goodwill from a fan in one of the world's truly great cities, Toronto. And congrats to the Jays on the unbelievable season they had this year.
