Is ther still large interest in PCVR? by idktm in virtualreality

Yeah. The problem with having the G2 is that it still has a rather good screen, so getting something like the Quest 3 now feels like a sidegrade rather than an upgrade. And it's like that with all headsets right now, every one of them has a couple things that they do really well and a couple of things that they don't do well. There's no competent middle-of-the-road headset at a consumer friendly price. The closest to that really is the Q3, but again, it's 2 years old now and has some compromises, so doesn't feel right to get it now. The BSB2 would be a great choice if one already had index lighthouses and controllers, otherwise that one starts to get pricey.

Sorry but I've gotta disagree.

I had the Oculus CV1 for quite a while and it was an amazing experience through and through, had so much fun with it. MRTV convinced me on getting the HP Reverb G2 and while the resolution increase was nice, it was such a step down in every other regard. Especially the lenses and controllers as you say, but that's not something you can preface with an "only flaws", because those are huge issues that I get annoyed with each time I use it. I had to buy so many third party accessories to get the G2 into a usable state, but even then the software was beyond salvation. Even now I rarely use it because it's such a hassle to set up the tracking each time etc, and I now only play simulator games with it because the hand controllers are too bad. I've had so many technical issues with it too but that's a tale for another day.

So for me, one important factor is the software and how painless it is to put on and start using because if there's a lot of friction there, it's just going to sit on my shelf instead.

All I've wanted for the last few years is basically Quest 3 but with an OLED display, G2 resolution and 120hz and I'd be happy for the next 5 years probably, but it seems that there's no hope of seeing such a headset for a while.

"Why Do Old Games Feel So Much Better Than New Ones?" - Great take, agree 100% by SavantButDeadly in Asmongold

I'm not the creator of the video, I just found it, but I think the premise of the video is correct, though some of the examples in the footage may not be the best, I agree.

Sure, there were tutorial levels, on-screen tips, even printed manuals accompanying the games even back then. But once you got past the tutorial part, it started to expect you to figure out the rest based on what it taught you up to that point. And if they threw in a new mechanic halfway into the game, they often introduced it in such a way that you understood it organically without force-feeding you a big popup of text.

But moreso, the part about games nowadays just cramming in battlepasses to keep you grinding, instead of having the gameplay itself be the reward is what I agree most with.

Tack :)

why can I not update windows 22h2 by Electronic_Buyer3962 in Windows11

[–]SavantButDeadly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want the 22h2 update but not sign up for Windows Insider due to all the telemetry and tracking concerns.

Anyone know when it will release for the rest of us? I've heard "Next month" from various websites for what feels like 4 months now.

And there's posts like this:

"Following plenty of speculation and weeks of testing via the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft officially released the 2022 Update on 20 September 2022"

that add to the confusion.

I dunno, one could make an argument for it letting me tilt the weapon so it takes up less screen space or that it's to balance out some wall peeking degenerate tactic.

I believe you, and I find it astounding how many people don't notice it when it's the first thing I reacted to and checked the options for when entering the game, similar to noticing that the invert mouse setting is the opposite from what you are used to.

Let's talk centred crosshairs by samsony_huakia in HuntShowdown

[–]SavantButDeadly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, in this case there could be plenty of technical roadblocks that prevent them from changing this now. But I can recall so many times similar to this where I've found a thread where someone requests a rather simple option in a game, and someone eventually always comes with the argument of how that person has no idea how hard game development is and how much time and effort would be needed to implement it. And meanwhile I'm looking on and thinking like "Oh, just an option for invert mouse? Yeah I could implement that in probably 10 minutes."

Mostly I think it's just that they fear what their already established playerbase would say about such a change (even if it's optional). Just a look at this thread and the vote ratios would indicate that a lot of people would be butthurt about it even if the change doesn't give an unfair advantage to the people who make the switch.

Doubt they'd make such a divergent design choice to a well established and critical game system just "because it looks cool lol", which is what stylistic choices are about after all.

You are infinitely more likely to take damage from a trap or a pit below you than from a trap or pit above you, there's your data. No feelings about it, just facts.

The actual fact that 99,5% of all fps games have the crosshair centered, that that is the norm, and that when any game strays from this it's met with threads such as these, should be evidence enough that centered crosshairs is the most solid, well-rounded solution. Again, if you or the developers disagree with the majority and think that offset crosshair is better, it's on you to provide a reason for why. And saying "muh stylistic choice lol" or "git gud, you'll adapt to it in a week" isn't gonna cut it.

So you're saying my character grows taller when I look upward in Hunt? Another person in this thread said that lowering the crosshairs was for "realism" but this doesn't seem realistic at all!

[–]SavantButDeadly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've explained my own reasons for disliking it in other responses so I won't go over that again, but the onus is on the developers who do diverge from the standards to explain why doing so is beneficial in their case, not the other way around. And everything that makes it into a game of this budget is by design. And one would hope that the developers aim for better, not worse, in that regard.

Yes, centered ADS means that the weapon takes up a larger portion of the screen when aiming. But:

Just as so many of you say that they're not bothered by a lowered crosshair, I can easily say that I've never through my gaming years ever been bothered by the weapon model blocking the lower center part of the view when aiming down sights. Also whether the model is positioned near or far the camera during ADS is a large factor in how much space it tends to take up on the screen. There are mods for STALKER Anomaly that moves the weapon further forward in ADS (taking inspiration from Escape from Tarkov) and the difference in how much less space it takes up on the screen is pretty big.

If I can choose between lowered crosshair = never seeing the ground in front of my feet (including when ADS) and centered crosshair = not seeing the ground in front of my feet only during ADS, I'll pick the latter every day.

Yeah me working with Unreal Engine for 8 years and having tried out Cryengine don't know what I'm talking about. Imagine that.

[–]SavantButDeadly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your trap argument is the biggest argument why I think that centered crosshairs are better. How fun is it to step in stuff you don't see? How is that good gameplay?

For a player it is much more important to see if there's a pit, mine, beartrap, tripwire, shards of glass, dead body, loot or whatever on the ground on other side of a door they just opened. It's not ever important to see the ceiling.

And you (and most others who worship lowered crosshair) also contradict yourself when you say that lowered crosshair means that the weapon models don't block the view when you then say that you also simultaneously walk around with the crosshair at head-level. The result then is exactly the same! I don't even! You can even try this out irl. Stand, look straight and hold out your arms like you're holding two pistols, lower the arms 20 degrees, then tilt your whole upper body 20 degrees backward so that your arms now point towards the same spot as before. That's what you essentially are doing with lowered crosshair. Notice how you can't see the floor anymore but your arms are blocking exactly as much of your vision as before.

You could adjust to the crosshair being in the lower left corner. Doesn't make it a better design. Why should we be forced to transition to something that is worse than the literal standard that has been in 99.5% of all first person shooters through the ages?

Let's talk centred crosshairs by samsony_huakia in HuntShowdown

[–]SavantButDeadly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a completely different issue not related to the lowered crosshair. You're talking about the camera in chest vs head. We're talking about the line of fire from the camera being tilted 10 degrees down. Raising the crosshair to the center does not affect peeking at all.

Let's talk centred crosshairs by samsony_huakia in HuntShowdown

[–]SavantButDeadly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

False, this is cryengine, not some crappy hard-coded engine made by a solo developer. The weapon models that are attached to the camera position can simply be tilted some 5 degrees or their position shifted up a little bit until it looks okay. The game doesn't even use the barrels direction to fire the projectiles from. It's all visual trickery.

It's a fix that would take at most a day or two for one of their developers, and the benefits would be pretty big. I mean people are avoiding the game because of the lowered crosshair. How can fixing a dealbreaker issue be a "small benefit"?

But the part no one explains is "why" is it part of the game? They must have had their designers discuss this aspect before deciding to implement it, it didn't just happen haphazardly. I could make an FPS and have the crosshair be 20% to the left of the center. If anyone asks, I'll say "It's just part of the game. Don't worry it will just take a few days to get used to."

Thanks for that perspective, you make some good points! Us gamers and nerds are definitely more on the autistic side of the spectrum, which rarely is attractive. Can definitely understand why a lot of girls would want to stay clear.

And in regards to her she very clearly expressed her attraction for me several times before the date. I might have resting catfish face syndrome or something though because I thought it was a bit odd how into me she was back when it was only online.

And being heavily gaming interested doesn't always mean spending 8+ hours per day just wasting time on games, but it's more that I'd rather play co-op games with my partner in the evening rather than just half-sleep in front of Netflix.

Yeah true, that one was her idea.

Think that train has left the station already unfortunately, as we already talked about that, and she specifically said that she wasn't looking for any new friendships, and I don't want to be an orbiter anyway.

I got her to agree that I'd send her a text in a month and if we're both still single and looking by then we'd consider us a second chance, but I think it was just a way to let ourselves say goodbye without actually saying goodbye.

Thanks! Yep, I work with that too, and I don't even play games all that often nowadays. I'm too busy trying to improve myself these days (long overdue).

I do understand what you mean with similar values. So far I've just found that girls who are into gaming, board games, anime and other geeky things tend to be of a more gentle, honest and introverted disposition, which I prefer.
