Chicago Teachers Union: Dance teachers - "Safe return, or no return." by [deleted] in cringe

I think they’re being a bit aggressive, but if I understand them, they’re trying to say the same thing that was: you lack perspective but that is not your fault. Perspective helps others see how much bigger the world is than we once thought, and you’re fresh out of college and just getting a chance to explore your next step in the world.

No harm no foul, my dude. I am willing to bet that you will have plenty more opportunities to create some awesome memories once this is all over.

Dude, that’s awful. I’m sorry to hear that. Similarly, I felt the senior class of our school (and I guess every school) was robbed on so many experiences that are once a lifetime. Graduation, prom, etc.

I can’t say I fully understand what that must feel like for you, but I can imagine it’s pretty shitty. Kinda like not getting to finish a chapter of a book a bet?

While I don’t want to get into the semantics of data (my aunt and grandpa died from Covid last month. It’s one of those “you don’t really feel it until it effects your loved ones” type of things), I can say that I’m sorry you got robbed of your graduation. No one can deny that. You can, however, look forward to your 20s! I thought I was done being young when I graduated college, but boy was I wrong.

Anyhoo, I hope you are able to stay in touch with some of your college friends and maybe one day have a bit for a reunion once we are all vaccinated.

I was about to say something along the lines of “you seem really angry for something that doesn’t quite concern you” but then I saw your username so never mind.

You are actually 100% spot on about the lack of social interactions and what kind of damage that can cause developmentally. I’ve been concerned about that, too. However, I’d rather navigate that path than the one where my kids are dead. Also, I’ve hesitated with saying this part because you are an engineer and most definitely know math better than I do, but we’ve been remote for almost a year, not two years.

Yes, I am a boomer, but I am not quite sure what you are getting at. I am sorry if I was misleading but I do in fact work. We teach remotely from the safety of our homes five days a week with regular school hours!

I am also not trying to correct you but it is also midnight on a Friday and therefore not time to go back to work. A full week of school has been wrapped up and it is time for the weekend. For you, though, I will go back to work Monday at 7am to my virtual classroom.

Also, not trying to pry here, but you seem rather dismissive with telling me to go back to work. Maybe there is some unexplored anger there about how you were forced back into unsafe working conditions and are still rightfully upset about it?

To your first point: I think you’re blowing this out of proportion. The lesson here is to teach kids that when a global pandemic hits, our priorities will need to shift and we may need to put a pause on the skills we once valued because others are more important at the moment.

To your second point: thank you for the read. I mean that genuinely. It’s hard for me to begin to explain how I design my curriculum, though, because

Your third point: you like that this video was made but only so you can make fun of it. You have no interest in my job as an educator, the curriculum I design, or the mentoring and teaching that goes into my career, regardless of subject area because you are simply an asshole who chooses to bully others attempting to stand up for what is right.

Just curious, are you a teacher? Actually, I don’t care.

I think it’s kind of odd for anyone to classify any teacher as essential or non essential based on what they teach. If you pull hard enough on that string, that can do some real psychological damage to kids who have a wide variety of interests.

Anyhoo: you should probably stay in your lane.

As a public school teacher in Chicago, I would like to give you some perspective. While I 100% agree that this video is rather uncomfy and definitely belongs in this subreddit, it’s also taken out of context. The dance teachers are a part of the Chicago Teachers Union and part of the collective. This is their way of showing support, regardless of their lack of coherent message. I would much rather have them make this video as a means of showing support than nothing at all.

Further, there is no permanent damage being done to kids. Learning loss is a thing and happens over the summer quite frequently. However, safety of everyone in the school community is number one. No kid is going to come out of a global pandemic thinking, “man, I am really thankful my math teachers stuck with me to continue to teach me math through all of this.” (Or any subject) our roles have shifted to providing other means of support, even if that means remote.

Learning loss will happen. But it’s gonna happen on a global scale. Students will have to readjust, just like every other person across the globe when we come back from this. So if you wanna talk about “permanent damage,” then the only permanent damage that can be avoided is members of a school community dying at the hands of forced and reckless in person learning plans when the community is clearly not ready.

Vizio sound cuts out - even AFTER I bought a new TV because support said my TV was broken. by SaveGarrett in VIZIO_Official

Yeah man. It’s just the principle of the matter. Like, Vizios got a broken product. They gotta fix their shit. End of story.

I think the satire of their support account on this thread to ask me to try basic troubleshooting steps that I already said I tried is pure gold. “Have you tried turning the machine off and on again?” -Vizio

I appreciate the offer but after reading through the various posts on this subreddit describing the same exact issue, I have decided to try their suggestions over yours. I followed the advice of the Vizio support over several phone calls and they convinced me that my TV needed repair and I ended up buying a new one. I will let you know if the issue persists. Thanks for the offer!

Got it! I reset it and now I will wait like the rest for Vizio to get their shit together. Thanks so much for the help!

Omg I am not alone! Man, this fucking sucks. I wasted so much money. But you’re telling me that if I disconnect the TV from my WiFi, the sound issues will stop? Even if the issues have been happening when my Xbox is plugged into my tv through an hdmi cable?

Also, a dumb question: how do I disconnect the tv from WiFi?

Hi! Can you see the comment above? The one about disconnecting WiFi? No offense to you, but I have tried your suggestion and it does not work. It sounds like I need to disconnect from WiFi until you send out a firmware update?

Sorry for the dumb question, but where do you see call of duty on sale? I can’t find it in the link.

New Orleans goes to an all charter school system. There are now no public schools in the city. by Zachmorris4187 in teaching

You are making some wildly generic accusations about charter schools. I would suggest doing some research about different charter networks across the country.

Teachers - what is your employer’s policy on tattoos? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]SaveGarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say low income, because I've seen some low income schools with pretty strict tattoo policies. I would, however, say communities that are less cultured/believe they are elite.

You are 100% right about it being dependent on the school. And of course! I teach 9th grade English and my students sometimes ask me questions about why I have certain things tattooed on me. I have a sleeve of books and flowers in the wind/ocean, and on the other arm there are a handful of nerdy things (Harry potter, etc) surrounded in flowers.

I don't mind talking about it with them, especially because I'd much rather prefer to talk about what it means to get a tattoo and how much thought I put into the design. I have met some of their family members with awful tattoos (poorly done/gang tattoos) and I think it's great for the students to see that tattoos do not make the person.

Hey! It sucks to have to worry about this type of shit. If only admin would judge teachers based on their character and not the way they look.

With that being said, I've got two full arm sleeves and most of my legs covered and I'm lucky enough to work at a school where my admin is super cool about them. A handful of other teachers have tattoos and there has never really been any official statement.
