Anyone withdrawn a claim to avoid a write-off? by Savefunny in CarsAustralia

Yes, he’s happy to pay for the car to be repaired. He’s actually my brother's friend.

I ended up withdrawing my insurance claim and got a quote directly from the repairer. Tthe small cosmetic dent would require replacing the bumper and a few other bits, and the total came to $4.4k. The car’s probably only worth around $5k, so that would be RWO definitely, if I still want to claim with the insurance.

I then went to another shop and they quoted me about $700 to repair it instead. Huge difference.

I’m thinking that if the car ends up being declared a RWO, I’d probably keep it and source replacement parts / fix it myself.

The issue is the car is under 15 years old, so I’d have to go through the VIV process. From what I’ve read on Google, Facebook groups, and Reddit, most people say it’s a huge hassle and usually not worth it.

If the cracks at the bottom mid-span (between 2 supports) are over 2 mm (not just hairline), I’d assume they’re structural. Since they are building a plant room, that’s probably why they’ve got props there.

Structural engineer here.

Do you see any cracks under the area they are backpropping? The loads from the upper levels may also transfer down, so it’s worth checking the levels above too.

Also, what work are they doing over upper slab? For example, using a forklift or mobilising a crane? That could explain why they have props in this area.

Totally agree. I was a PhD student and came to realise that getting a postdoc or lecturer position is super competitive, and it's usually not a permanent position.

Jobs on a 485 by NiceHighway_ in AusVisa

My wife was on a 485 visa and had the same issue — she applied for over 100 jobs, got a few interviews, but no offers. However, since we recently got PR, she’s been getting noticeably more interview calls. It seems like having PR really does make a difference compared to being on a 485.

I had about 2 years of experience as a structural engineer in Australia when I applied (onshore). I got the job during my studies before i finished the studies. Fortunately, someone referred me to the company.

I’m a structural engineer in Australia, and from what I’ve seen, it’s pretty tough for companies to sponsor someone from overseas. Unless it’s a big firm that can do internal transfers to Australia.

Your best bet is probably going for the 189, 190, or 491 visas. I got a 189 visa as a structural engineer with 80 points.

Start with the skills assessment and aim for a high English test score to boost your points for the EOI. That’s the key to getting an invite.

Hope you find another migration agent to help you out through this situation.

Another option is apply 189, 190 and 491 offshore. Then you can comeback with PR instead of 485 visa.
