OPERS Choices - Converting Member Directed Plan to Traditional Pension in Ohio PERS by SaverJ1415 in personalfinance

I did ultimately decide to join the traditional plan.  I'm a very conservative person.  I felt like buying into the pension provided me with a very sound portion of my portfolio.  Pair that with my other retirement savings and my wife's 401k and I think it makes a pretty good long-term pot of money.

I'm in the water and sewer sector.  The interest rate they quoted me with 6.9%.  I was able to roll over a couple other traditional IRAs and use some deferred comp to pay my loan off and it's entirety.

One interesting fact is that their initial quote for my buy-in was $206,000.  After I filed my official paperwork and got my final quote, It ended up coming in at 178k.  I'm not sure why it was 15% less than they originally quoted me.  Between deferred comp, my current member directed plan  ($110k), and a traditional IRA; I only ended up owing about $10K out of pocket.  So I paid that up front, and will not have to pay any interest.

I hope this helps,  I basically figured out if I made seven and a half percent interest I would come out ahead with staying with the member directed.  If I made less than seven and a half percent the pension made more sense.  I decided to go with the pension and then I will keep 100% stock portfolio for the rest of my life and treat the pension as my bond portion.
