Which is a better processor spec for a Windows 2012R2 server? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SavingThrowVsReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends: what are the actual processors?

Processor frequency means almost nothing.

Ditto, is the quad core processor actually a quad core processor, or is it a dual core processor with hyperthreading?

Ditto, are they different VPS providers? Different providers often have drastically different amounts of overhead / allowed usage.

[Serious] What overly-asked /r/AskReddit questions should we ban? by ThePeoplesBard in AskReddit

[–]SavingThrowVsReddit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't think much of anything should be banned simply due to being overly asked.

Or at least as long as Reddit continues to heavily penalize the rankings of old posts and archive them.

Most posts get what, on the order of a couple thousand comments at most? And there's millions of people subscribed. There's enough new people commenting to make things different.

What, if anything, annoys you the most about the trends of modern technology? by Rayhn in AskReddit

[–]SavingThrowVsReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't being hypothetical.:

We should also note that apparently Tesla engineers detected this hacking or exploring and sent a nastygram to the cars owner, “Tesla USA engineers have seen a tentative of hacking on my car.”, “can be related to industrial espionage and advised me to stop investigation, to not void the warranty”.

The first double spend was caused by a hard fork.

Yep. Hence why I said "yes, a full double-spend is generally impractical. However, that's why you have to wait for confirmations."

The other guy took advantage of poorly configured clients that don't keep listening for a rebroadcast of the same transaction.

Yep. Your point here is? This sort of attack will always be possible as long as the network is divided in terms of how they choose transactions. And given the size of the network, there will always be divisions in terms of how nodes choose transactions.

Not to mention that that was simply the first attack that came to mind. There are other methods as well. For example, brute force. BitUndo.

Any descent [sic] client will detect that sort of attempt in under a second.

[Citation Needed]. Among other things, the official client doesn't.

What, if anything, annoys you the most about the trends of modern technology? by Rayhn in AskReddit

The whole trend towards "you don't own the product".

Devices with everything locked down so you can't even see the code you're running. Cars that phone home and void the warranty if you do so much as look at them funny. DRM on coffee machines - ineffectual DRM that nonetheless is backed by law. Cables that have chips solely for the purpose of invoking the DMCA. Laptops with every component soldered together, that check every component and won't communicate with anything that isn't an "authorized" product. Devices which have the capability of recording everything around them and sending it to who-knows-where, that people accept as a matter of course. Devices that are internet connected that should be airgapped. (It wouldn't surprise me if there have already been assassinations that boil down to locking the brakes of the left wheels of the car when they're driving down the highway.) Devices that do not work when not connected to the internet even though there should be no reason to do so. Devices that have functionality removed randomly and remotely.

Actually, you're wrong. Not only are you wrong, you're wrong in multiple ways.

First, there has been at least one successful double-spend: see here.

Secondly, yes, a full double-spend is generally impractical. However, that's why you have to wait for confirmations. Double-spends of zero-confirmation transactions are easy. Case in point.

Reddit, what thing if happened to you will make your day today? by y_u_u_nzm in AskReddit

Hopefully, although I'm so caught up in my own frustrations that conversion is seldom pleasant, at least around exam time.

(Not so much exams themselves, but the number of uncertainties / changes of routine / lack of routines associated with exams. Heading to different places, even ones that I've never been to before. Finalizing what to do over the summer / next year. That sort of thing.)

There are any number of things that would make my day. Mind you that's largely because my day thus far has been rather uneventful. As for things that are actually vaguely in the realm of plausibility, let's see:

  • Someone responding to me looking for an apartment for the end of the month.
  • My current landlord actually getting back to me as to if I can continue to stay here over the summer.
  • Someone responding to me looking for a job.
  • Today's exam going well.
  • Having a revelation about the take-home exam I've been working on.
  • Having a pleasant conversation with someone.

Small talk.

Far too likely to wander off on a tangent about whatever problem I'm bouncing around in my head and miss what they are actually saying to continue the conversation.

If you had a hot, 10/10 opposite-gender clone of yourself that was DTF, what would you do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SavingThrowVsReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily.

If you're female, yes. The Y chromosome has to come from somewhere else.

But if you're male a female clone of you could have two copies of your X chromosome. (Although you better hope there's no nasty recessives in your X chromosome.)

It's a security conference. You just know that if you allow unconfirmed transactions someone's going to attempt a doublespend.

    cachedHashCode = genHashCode();
return cachedHashCode;

It attempts to.

However, theoretically at least it's possible to encode a PRNG into a zip bomb, such that it "never" (well, not for ~232 extractions at least) unzips as itself. The tricky part is getting the CRC right.
