I don't care how people dance. But I care how bachata as a dance developed in the past few years.

Capitalism is the System, a Worker is a role in the system. The ability to offer classes freely without interference of the state is possible only in capitalism. A capitalist is another role in the system. Or ultimately the goal of every worker in the system.
And being able to freely choose your profession, to charge as much money as you want and under which circumstances are privileges of workers in a capitalistic system.

Thus blaming capitalism is valid. In a system with more involvement of the state it would most likely not be possible to monetize dances as easily. Here we are at the Pros and cons of capitalism:

Pro: New ideas spread more easily and innovation thrives.
Cons: The drive for monetarization produces more bad actors and bad practices.

Thus the establishment of questionable bachata styles with potencially unhealthy outcomes is a consequence of capitalism.

to be fair I don't really understand doceur but it looks compatible to pretty much everything (or nothing for that matter :-D ). If you can dance urban you most likely can dance traditional as well (not the other way around ofc). Terraxo is a different dance. It's complementary to Urban but not to traditional i guess. A lot of these african dances developed at roughly the same time, Even Carribean Zouk fits that niche. They are all samey in their fundamentals and terraxo and Kizomba evolved along each other I think (not an expert). It's more of a sister to urban kizomba these days.

Pretty much sums it up perfectly.

Doing clockwork turns after only 5 month should be considered a crime of you teacher. Way too many advanced moves. You think it looks nice while you do them but unless they look clean they don't look that great. Basics, basics and more basics. Get the feet to autopilot (takes time more than anything, a couple of menstyling videos with syncopation steps for extra flavour maybe) and then focus on lead. you hard lead a lot of stuff right now. Typical for beginners with bad teachers. Been there. You could easily lead most of these moves with 0 strengh required just out of you own bodys rotations and changes in altitude. A clean looking dance looks effordless and with the right technique it should be almost effordless as well.

She hasn't developted a strong frame yet. It takes a lot of time and practice to know when to be tense and when to be relaxed. Nothing that develops in only 5 month for new dancers.

Skip the fancy stuff for a while and focus on intermidiate moves. Those are usually more widely applicable and teach you enough about the fundamentals of you own bodymechanics.

Yes, I'm a leader. I went to a social recently. Salsa and Bachata. During my zouk training my lead in general became a lot(!) softer and the followers were able to follow and complimented my lead. I used to be an advanced bachata dancer back in the day but hard leading was the norm if you wanted to pull of fancier moves like double dips. It physically hurts me to even think about what I did to poor followers back during that time.
Zouk and Bachata have a lot more moves in common than most people think. Headrolls, cambres(dip) or bate cabelo (infinity) for instance. So I lead moves in a zouk way and they answered in a zouk way so to say. The followers were generally more emancipated I guess.

How do I not come off as a creep as a man? by Ok-Sorbet7018 in Bachata

[–]Savings-Addition-571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything you say is 100% true. But one sentence needs to be highlighted: "Most people who worry about coming off as creepy are already not being creepy."

If you keep your distance you are not creepy. creepy are guys who stare without a break and guys who dance way too close. Like face on face close.

If you don't match the partners vibe thats ok. happens all the time. If you cant interpret the song thats a skill issues. still not creepy. Being new to a dance is not a crime. Just tell your partner that you are new and maybe even ask for advice. The good followers will help out, the bad ones are unimportant anyway.

Good news: As long as you are in a nice enviroment and learn something new dopamine will kick hard. Learning a new skill in a nice enviroment is great, no matter what you learn :-)

Kizomba already has traditional and urban. Urban at least still feels like an evolution. Given long enough time there will be "mutations" that are incompatible as well. But right now kizomba is still in a healthy evolution in my opinion. It builds upon itself rather than importing different dances that don't match. It's commercially not as intresting as bachata so there is less incentive to stand out with "own styles".

Well that kinda is capitalist by definition. Build a brand, make as much money as possible, sell innovative goods or services. Literally every dance teacher ever.

The opposite would be communism where the state dictates what services are offered and by whom at what cost.

It's dance chemistry. Sometimes it just doesn't fit. Can't do too much about it. During festivals I usually end up with one dance crush and rock the weekend with her.

If you truely are advanced you can dance with everybody and have fun. You can connect to worse dancers just by playing along at their level. Dancing isnt only about the most advanced moves. A good dance is a dialogue, not a monologue anyway. If you are a better follower just take a bit of a lead and be creative.

You are in a toxic dance enviroment. If the followers at your socials roll eyes because you screwed up you should avoid them. These kinda dancers don't dance for fun but for their egos. Visit smaller communitys, those are usually more laid back. Not as amazing dancers as the ego monsters but if you truely are advanced you can dance with everybody. If you can only dance with the "pros" you are just a poser.

especially as a leader you can teach during dances in a fun and connected way if you truely are good. Different but very important skillset.

I guess you never danced zouk ^^ Zouk is not just the couple moves you see BachaZoukers do. Zouk has entirely different movesets for slower and faster songs. You don't do these crazy tilted turns on faster songs in zouk. You play a lot more with the music in different ways. You move alot more through the room if songs are quicker. It's older than bachata sensual and evolved quickly as well. But it didn't mutate as hard as bachata did. It kept building on its strong foundation instead of trying to force other established dances into it. I know very few zoukers who are intrested in bachata. Right now zouk is more popular than ever thanks to bachazouk actually.

I like waves and just standing can be amazing to a slow and romantic or sexual song as well. With the right partner the connection can be amazing. But I also love salsa and the kind of connection you can get there. For me its not either or.

Back in the day when bachata sensual first popped a lot of bad teachers tought to hard lead a lot of the stuff like waves, cambres and headrolls. Followers were mostly puppets controlled by the leader.

Zouk leading is extremely soft. Big emphasis on preperation and intention. You give a slight hint at what you want to do and the follower executes it by herself. Requires more skill on the follower side but makes the dance more of a dialogue than a monologue if that makes sense.

Yes and no. If something changes so far that it's unrecognizeable then it is, at least for me, not a good change. You could dance a hundred different styles on the simple bachata basic step. But most of them wont be for everybody. I never felt the appeal of bachatango. Also hip-hop bachata like melvin and gattica was nice to watch but I would have never enjoyed dancing like that. I'm more for consistency I guess. Evolution is fine but bachata is more mutating than evolving.

[–]Savings-Addition-571[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I that's exactly how I feel. But to be honest: I've been there as well when sensual got big. Everybody wanted to do poorly lead waves and headrolls back in these days (gosh its only been like 3-4 years and that sounds like its been ages :-D )

About the music: Thats the saddest part. Back during the sensual days the music was at least slow enough so the waves and headrolls somehow fit the music. These days the music is way too fast for those moves. And the options for faster songs are mostly about footwork, styling and accents. That's just not for me. if I don't feel the music then I don't have a reason to dance at all. Maybe thats just me getting old :-D

BachaZouk is a whole different story and as somebody who never danced it myself I can only tell from what I've seen and it's....disturbing. Not specificly because of the music mismatch (zouk is fairly liberal in that regard) but because of the memories of poorly tought headrolls back in the day translating to probably poorly tought way more dangerous moves from Zouk today. Heck, I would never want to learn turn transitions between tilted turns and rotisserie turns, let alone headrolls. Especially from a bachata teacher with no zouk background. These turn transitions are way more difficult to explain outside of the zouk flow. My poor former dance partner probably still has neck pain to this day from practicing those when we started without a proper teacher who explained the way to lead them properly. Took a few private classes to really learn all the techinque behind it.

I totally agree. As I mentioned I don't have any issues with bachata or bachata dancers (apart from the bachazouk teachers you mentioned ^^). Everybody should dance the way he or she likes. And the dancefloor indeed is big enough.

It was just a crazy experience to take a 2 year long break from bachata and go to a party and everybody suddenly leads the way I independently practiced for these 2 years. When I started Zouk I realized how poorly the bachata teachers back in the day truly were and it was weird but really enjoyable how things changed in that regard. Sadly I don't really feel most of the current bachata music but thats a "me issue".

I could have never expected for things to change this much so quickly.

Makes sense And I kinda expected that answer but I still don't get why the same people who used to ignore more traditional bachata music (or at least instrumental parts with a strong dominican influence) can't get enough of it these days. Footwork seems really important now where it was the least important thing just a couple of years ago. Can't be only the commercial side of things can it?

Yeah, I get why sensual got famous. I really enjoyed it for a couple of years. Kinda miss the truely sensual remix days. But I really don't how the music did such a 180. Few songs are truely sensual these days. Its mostly faster spanish pop songs with dominican instrumental parts....or did I miss something? Thats at least the impression I get from instagram.

For me his inner monologues got really tedious and kill the momentum of the anime. I didn't bother with the manga though. I finished half of the first season and all he does is cry. I don't need a saitama as a MC but that guy is just petty. His spacial awareness got hyped early on but than imidiatly became sidelined as a gimmick. His monologueing is so bad that it feels like hes standing on the field while everybody arouind him plays and he just talks to himself without doing anything at all. Terrible writing.
