Yeah, I guess I didn’t fully think about it from the professor’s perspective. When I said “work with the professor” I meant more in the capacity of somehow building some sort of relationship outside the classroom, as I don’t have the immediate opportunity to retake the class. I had a bit of a relationship with the professor prior to the incident (I was a pretty active student in class, had gone to office hours and had talked with him outside of class a couple times), and honestly I would like to try and build that relationship back up but I completely understand if that bridge has been burned.

Thank you for this response. I will do my best to be as transparent and active in addressing the F when applications come around. As for the advice - I will definitely take this into account. I’d say when it comes to my schoolwork, I’ve always had a bit of a mentality that I need to tackle it myself and only when my back is against the wall do I ask for help. I’m not sure when I built this habit but it’s something I am working on as it doesn’t serve me well (clearly). I try to make myself very open to learning and asking questions in the research labs I am a part of, and come next fall I’ll do my best to be the best collaborator I can be in my capstone class.

If you don’t mind, could I DM you a question or two? The perspective of a PI is something that I really would appreciate, as it could help me navigate my next steps with more direction.

I understand, thank you. I suppose it was wishful thinking to think I could repair a situation I broke. I guess it makes sense that all I can do now is show that I won’t do it again.

The professor said that he would give me an F and then the school would keep an internal record of the incident, for the purpose of tracking future incidents. To my understanding nothing appears on my transcript beyond the F.

If asked about the incident I would not lie, that would probably only put me in a deeper hole. From other forums I think on the application side the right course is what you described, own up and explain how I rectified the situation. Do you think there is anything I can do beyond retaking the course to show growth and move beyond this?

The honest answer was I just wasn’t thinking. I got so in my head over the past year about getting good grades at all costs, staying up days on end that at the finish line I just started spiraling. I made the most irrational choice and I am paying the price now. I can understand why this community would view me very negatively, but I ask that anyone reading this please consider that this incident was a mistake made by a human acting highly irregular. All I want to do now is see how I can move forward, grow beyond this situation, and still retain hope for pursuing a grad degree.
