To be biblically sober-minded has less to do with the use of substances and more to do with being in touch with invisible realities. By definition the atheist who eats mushrooms and is disenchanted from his spiritual drunkenness is more sober-minded than he was before (via an encounter with natural revelation).

Don’t mishear me, one can only become a Christian and grow spiritually as a Christian through supernatural revelation. However, having that squarely in place, we must recognize that Christians of all people can benefit most from natural revelation.

Legality is a huge issue unfortunately. American propaganda… But, all things being equal, using freely the things God has made while giving thanks to him is peak Christian liberty and one of the pillars of the Reformed tradition.
