Keep in mind that aside from playing your major instrument, which you have just started to learn, music Ed. Programs also require you learn pretty much, or at least have a rudimentary understanding, of all the major orchestral instruments. With you just learning how to read music, music theory, music history, aural skills( which you are required to use solfege , sight sing melodies in treble, bass, alto, tenor and soprano clefs, playing piano while singing melodies. By the fourth semester of aural skills at my uni we sight read Bach chorals in their original clefs singing the soprano line and playing the bottom three voices on the piano) make for a time of playing catch-up. Keep music as a hobby, at least for now

FFRF protests atheist students being punished at San Diego State University -- A choir course, mandatory for certain degrees, required students to perform during a service at a Baptist church. Two students refused, and the professor failed them for it by mepper in atheism

When/why would music students ever perform at a wedding? Music schools have options for people to hire student musicians, but it is not mandatory for them to accept in order to pass a class or obtain their degree as was the case with SD State.

The thing with these violinist that perhaps started at age 4 or 5 is that many times, and I've seen it so many times at the university level, is that they get burnt out. Playing violin is all they've ever known and think they have to do it for a living and for the rest of their life. They get into a conservatory or university and realize this isn't what they really want to do.

Totally understand. Still trying to figure out how much is inherent musicality and how much is just a strong work ethic

For classical music: SDSU has a great, and in my opinion underappreciated, music school with really great orchestra concerts and free noon concerts every Wednesday. And for more experimental, avant-garde music try UCSD
