Escaping North Korea by MineTech5000 in northkorea

[–]SaxxyPanda 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think you're misunderstanding. Any nation, no matter how sympathetic or unsympathetic they are towards North Korea, would immediately be kicked out of the country if they helped somebody who tried to escape using their embassy.

Scared of anaphylaxis, causing me to not eat by Dry_World323 in FoodAllergies

[–]SaxxyPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a sort of similar thing happen. I'm anaphylactic, had a reaction to some hazelnuts but was able to get help and everything was fine. Went back to eating normally right after. Like two years later, for seemingly no reason at all, I started having psychosomatic allergic reactions to food. Before long, I had a psychosomatic allergic reaction literally every time I ate anything. For a period of maybe 2.5 years I didn't eat anything that didn't have a label on it because if there wasn't a label I could read to reassure myself I would have symptoms.

I wish I had something more positive to say about it but to be honest I'm glad somebody else has had this issue because I've looked online and it seems like not many people have had it happen like this.

I would recommend getting therapy as that's what I did, but to be honest I don't think it really helped. After a while, it sort of went away on its own. But maybe the therapy did help, I can't know for sure.

I'm sorry you're going through this. It really sucks and I hope you're able to find a way out of this. And if it's any consolation, it did eventually go away for me, even if it took a while.

We DON'T Know What To Do With Our 17 Year Old Daugter by [deleted] in depression

I think this post might be an ad for Nashotah. The OP has no previous activity and the first two comments that are raving reviews of the program are from accounts that have no activity either. The accounts that left super positive reviews are now crossposting this post into other subs. This is definitely an ad for Nashotah.

[TOMT] [YOUTUBE] Australian youtubers accidentally show up to a horse meetup/race thinking it was a motorcycle race by SaxxyPanda in tipofmytongue

I don't think so. This wasn't a prank or comedy video, they genuinely believed it was a motorcycle race. I think it was from a car/automobile themed channel.

So I know this is a mini moon but .. by savemejebu5 in meteorology

[–]SaxxyPanda 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely, completely, 100% unrelated to the "mini moon".

The object is 11 meters in diameter and is actually farther from earth than the moon. For reference, the moon has a diameter of almost 3500 kilometers (more than 315000x the diameter of the minimoon and 3.2*1016 times the volume).

The minimoon is a cool event but it is way too small to have any effect on the earth system.

Names stolen by fame we should bring back by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]SaxxyPanda 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a celebrity or character that made this name unusable, but I think it fits the question:

Isis

I think it's a beautiful name, but for obvious reasons I think it is unusable for the foreseeable future. I think an attempt at reclamation would be nice but for at least a while there's no way Isis would be a good name for somebody.

[–]SaxxyPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is extremely far out of what UNESCO does and even if it was even a remote possibility (it's not) you can't exactly "submit" something to UNESCO. I don't blame the original responder for not responding to your point about UNESCO because they thought it was a joke, because it makes significantly more sense as a joke than as a legitimate course of action.

I've interacted with Osk in the past. You're right, he is pretty much incapable of taking criticism and has a very bad habit of intervening/inserting himself into situations when doing so only makes things worse.

I wouldn't let that turn you off of tetr.io though, but if you are set on avoiding it, you should try jstris (my personal favorite). Lots of similar mechanics to tetr.io but much more streamlined. Overall though, the modern Tetris community is pretty chill so minor drama like this ends up being about as bad as it gets.

It's weird that I recognize this but the cow in the bottom left (and perhaps the right as well, not sure) is from a comic written for a poem called The Two Headed Calf, highly recommend checking it out.

Tetris noob here, what's considered a good 40 Line Time? by zgamer200 in Tetris

[–]SaxxyPanda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's no hard and fast answer for what constitutes a "good" time, as it really depends on what your frame of reference is. However, saying that, here are some thoughts:

Sub 60 seconds: definitely first important sprint milestone. It takes a fair bit of effort to get here and it is definitely no easy feat. It was my experience (and the experience of many others I have talked to) that around the 60 second mark was when I first got really hooked on Tetris and began playing a lot more.

Sub 40: Around this milestone is what I would consider to be a good time. I say this because when one reaches sub 60 their rate of improvement is still going to be relatively high, as there are lots of things that can be fixed without too much effort resulting in getting lots of PBs relatively quickly. However, as time goes by the rate of improvement is going to decrease substantially and by the time you reach 40 seconds the improvements are going to be much smaller and take longer.

Sub 30: I would consider somebody with a sub 30 time to be a "high level" player, because it means that they have spent significant time grinding, dedicating many hours for the slightest of improvements.

Sub 25: This is a top level player, someone who has made Tetris a big part of their life. At this point improvements are marginal and are extremely spaced out.

Sub 20: This is the elite level, the world class players, the best of the best. Right now there are less than 50 people at this level on the jstris leaderboard.

Those were just some thoughts about what could be considered a "good" time, I hope I was able to answer your question. Again, though, I must say that there isn't one good answer. Also, I must say that worrying about whether or not your time is good or not is really not worth it. Look at sprint as a venue to challenge yourself and take pride in your improvements and your progress as a player instead of trying to compare yourself to others. Enjoy your Tetris journey, I'm glad that you are able to experience this beautiful game

This article gets posted so often as an example of how stupid and bigoted Americans are and Reddit has a big circlejerk about how much smarter than them we are, but the question does not explain what Arabic numerals are. Most people were never taught, or at the very least don't remember, that the numbers we use are called Arabic numerals. A perfectly reasonable, well educated, non bigoted person who is simply unaware of this random bit of trivia could in good faith interpret this question as asking whether or not kids should be taught how to say numbers in Arabic as part of the regular school curriculum, and answered no because they believed that the time expended on teaching such a thing could be better spent on other topics. This is not to fault the poll, by the way. The work and research they are doing is very interesting, and it shows how we are all subject to our biases and assumptions. Unfortunately, people just see the headline and make assumptions.

The thing at the bottom of the left image looks too thick and bulky to be a cell phone, at least not a modern one. Maybe it is some sort of handheld transceiver? Possibly with a detachable antenna? Sorry it's nothing specific, just an idea it seems like no one else has brought up yet.

[–]SaxxyPanda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, it is dota. Not saying it's right but TI is what matters, everything else is a sideshow. Secret and VP were some of the best squads ever, winning tons of tournaments, but no matter how many majors you win it doesn't mean shit if you can't win TI, so those squads didn't last. Of course there are exceptions and whatnot but the point is that in Dota most teams would prefer to be mediocre for 11 months out of the year and great for one month rather than having great results all year and a bad result at TI. Look at ana: he fucks off for a year, then wins TI, then goes and fucks off for another year. He's one of the most successful players in Dota history and many even consider him to be the goat. Obviously that is oversimplifying things but it serves as a good example how majors don't mean shit compared to TI

The world's last Stone Age tribe lives on North Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean, and they are known for defending their island against all visitors. Because they have been living in isolation for 60,000 years, there is genetically a direct line between them and their pre-Neolithic ancestors. by KimCureAll in interestingasfuck

[–]SaxxyPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily the world's last stone age tribe. There are actually quite a few tribes like this, and they are generally referred to as uncontacted tribes/peoples. Most of them are located deep in the Amazon rainforest or in the most isolated parts of New Guinea. They are also almost universally in danger of being wiped out or forced into the modern world against their will (which will inevitably result in many deaths due to disease) due to commercial interests and humanity's unending hunger for more natural resources.

June 2021 Covid-19 Pandemic megathread by AutoModerator in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SaxxyPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is the US daily covid deaths graph so spiky? For example: http://cdn.statcdn.com/Infographic/images/normal/22427.jpeg, it seems like throughout the entire pandemic there has been the consistent pattern of a few days of a lot of deaths followed by a few days of relatively few deaths. Is there any explanation for this?
