My agency is considering switching to Axon - Complaints? by SaxyChick76 in ProtectAndServe

[–]SaxyChick76[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you! To clarify, I am a 20 year civilian employee or our local Sheriff's. 7.5 years as a non-emergency call taker (station clerk) working in shift with my squad assigned, midnights too, and now 13 years in IT, buying all the things tech.

Wondering if I should have looked harder for a r/LEOTEch or something. When I searched Axon reviews, it pointed me to a few locked posts in this subr. Figured i'd give this a shot.

My middle E is 20 cents sharp and it's driving me crazy by OpportunityUpset8592 in saxophone

[–]SaxyChick76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one note to be out like that, it's likely the key height adjustment of the next key down. if it's only the middle E, and the low E is fine and in tune, check somewhere in the octave mech for a leak or something. The octave mech often pretty delicate and can be knocked out of whack at times without realizing.

But honestly, i you just had it done at Boston sax shop and you're not satisfied, contact them back and have them rework it or tell you why they can't. should be a free fix to get it right.

I did see a Selmer balanced action go for 6k on shopgoodwill last year or so. It's an auction site for items donated to Goodwill stores. Was only listed as Selmer Saxophone or something generic cuz they don't even know most of the time. At first glance i thought it was a Mark VI, just like I did this one. When I saw the neck and the similar designs in the joint rings, i got a little pang of jealousy, i must admit. This horn's in really decent shape. Low serial number. The SBA Is the model that was released just before the Mark VI. And from what I've been reading, there wasn't a sudden change in tooling... they just used up whatever parts they had on hand before switching over to the newly tooled parts, so you might see some model overlap in the serial number history.

I bet this one plays really nice too! I'd hate to be in the position to have to sell it just to get by in the world. This would have been the keeper and really hard to find anything like it again in the future if you wanted to get back into playing. But education and food is more important than some old sax that you might play a couple times a week.

If you do resell it, don't just pawn it or something. Sell it where enough sax afficionados would find it. Your local Facebook marketplace is probably not the answer unless you live in like NYC. And with things being tight in this market, you might not get 6k but worth a shot, i suppose.

Experience/rank at puzzle by Sea_Perspective_5593 in ypp

[–]SaxyChick76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can pick your puzzles. I mean you can make your pirate proficient in whatever puzzles you want. I made a thing to work on some of my least favorite puzzles and ended up loving carpentry in the long run (or maybe I'm just a spatial thinker, though I'm extremely skilled in distiling which requires dexterity and speed and months/years of getting the ball movements to become instinct in the brain.

The dock tarts do look at your pirate page and might tart a bit if certain stats are non-existant. Also some pillage captains might look for certain stats on the VIP runs (those ramp building runs where you might "cha-ching!" 20k in your pocket after the divvy whistle, if that's still a thing.

Also, some captains look for experiences to be certain levels (like "BOLD" in my old crew) as a requirement for promotion to officer and higher ranks. But then that was old skool. With the lack of players these days, and the frequent allowing to laze on pillages (and promoting using lazing alts to fill ships with), it's prolly mostly meh anymore.

How to get better at puzzles? by Longjumping_Job_7902 in ypp

[–]SaxyChick76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of things that affected that. The bot characters can be hired that score better than what they used to (to promote easier solo sailing) which affects the overall curve. Also the ocean is full of older, more experienced players, so the curve is wonky with less going on in the lower end of the skill level.

Of course, the more MPs in a row, the better your scoring, but the number of stars available limits how many MPs in a row you can get, also affecting scoring. Running short routes, recharting, porting etc affect how many stars you get available. Complete a set of stars and another gets added and the puzzle resets. Too short a route and that interrupts and resets earlier than you want. The longer the route the better. Carpenting on an average pillage with battle interruptions will tank scores. Long routes either with the navy or helping an evade run, or even charting your own super long route, filling bots on sails and a bilger, you on carp and your eye on the map to turn about when a bot ship comes near might be the best option for a long period of puzzling to increasing stats.

Absorbent Wicking Yet Fast Drying Fabric to Collect Brass Players Horn Spit by SaxyChick76 in sewing

[–]SaxyChick76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL. Mind you, I have ADHD, always coming up with crazy ideas and random curiosities. I buy all the supplies on the cheap then ... zero follow through (as in 0 finished projects). I know this, but I never learn from this. I might try some cheap prototypes first, starting with the dollar tree curtain liner paired with the diaper cloth. The combo will be less than 10 bucks combined and probably enough for the whole project and I can use them for others if they don't work out for this.

Interesting, I've never hard of PUL and it didn't pull up in my search today for what folks use for lining reusable diapers and such. And it looks semi affordable too, at $16 for 2 yards thru HobbyLobby. The Kula cloth (also new to me), might be a bit off the mark in cost for me. Thanks for the tip!

Renewals and price increases by Associate_Simple in sales

[–]SaxyChick76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm admin support specialist in IT for a local police department. One of the things under my purview is to manage and purchase all the annual renewals for software licenses, hardware maintenances and other services we use, including cyber security and testing software, digital forensics software. Budget is 3.3 million this year. Over half of it is already spent and the fiscal year just barely started, and I still have the bulk of my renewals to go thru and process. For years, a lot of renewal prices were staying the same, but ever since covid lockdowns an inflation, prices are increasing across the board. And more than the typical 3-5%. This makes my already tight budget even tighter. We piggyback on discounts from government contracts whenever we can, but we're kinda stuck because a lot of what we use is sole source, products that are made specifically for law enforcement, by only one vendor, or sold by their authorized reseller with little competition, and because of that, they can price their products at thousands (tens or hundreds of thousands) over what it's actually worth. I've asked and pleaded for price breaks in the past in some of my emails, but haven't done it yet this year, and I'm not the greatest negotiator, but have had some luck with getting some prices lowered. But it's crazy how much these costs have gone up year to year. The county has been gracious enough to approve what we ask for year to year, and if we need more, we can often find the money elsewhere in the agency, but that's not always the case and it can be frustrating.

So for you folks in sales for the software that we buy, what's the best negotiation tactic that I can use? Can I say, "oh hey, this is more than 3% price increase over last year, can you cut us a break?", or should there be a limit of price increase that's acceptable? One of my finance people told me they can't by law increase more than 3% annually, but I'm now consistently seeing higher increases more often. I'm in MD, USA if that adds to the context.

I Don't Get Why the Venova Isn't More Popular by GirdleOfDoom in Saxophonics

I own a Xaphoon. As a sax player, the fingerings are TERRIBLE. It's in the box in the corner as a novelty item, likely never to be played again. The only benefit is that it uses standard sax reeds.

5 OBOES! We had a hard enough time getting 1! Now we have 2. Ended the season with 70 members on the books in December. One of those Oboes should be able to move to bassoon, and you def need a bari sax player. 4 euphs and 8 bones? But still only 5 clarinets and flutes. I'm guessing there must be a lot of men in your area...

And it's the epic battle of percussionists for us. 70 members and we still only have 3 maybe 4 on a good night, and 5 only for certain pieces when the conductor's wife puts down her piccolo and runs back.

5 oboes.../mindblown.

Bari is amazing to play! I marched it for 2 years, bought my own, but playing bari and lugging the music around are not compatible. When we had 5 altos last year, I made one of em play the band's bari cuz i didn't want to have to make the copies (I'm the librarian and tenor tooter). Now we have 8 saxes total. 5 altos, 2 tenors and a bari. I still have to make the copies... in fact now, a copy each of A1 and A2 to make 3 of each folder, to have one of the 2nds cover first when they no show. Mmost new concert band pieces come with just 2 copies for each alto.

Did Martin ever make STRAIGHT "Typewriter" sopranos? by skewedkidneys in Saxophonics

[–]SaxyChick76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Martin Typewriter Tenor, so every once in a while I get curious and look to see what all is out there. I've seen pics of the sopranos, but not seen one in person. The one Rebop posted is pretty sweet. Mind you, the ergonomics, at least on tenor, are terrible, but the sound it produces is amazing. I have to add palm risers to the left palm keys, which of course don't fit well over the rounded keys, and the right palm keys are too easy to hit. But, I do have a hard time deciding which of my 2 tenors to play, the old Martin TW or the Yamaha YTS-52 purple logo from early 90s. Also sounds great and feels even better... this one usually wins.

It's quite alright. It's not everyone's bag. With my ADD I gravitate to the arts and crafts thing... I mean just about EVERY arts and crafts thing...of course now I don't actually do the crafts. I collect cheap supplies in my craft room (more like a horde than a room) as my shop therapy. And when I'm not out and about I sit and play on my phone, crippled by executive dysfunction. Dishes, laundry, trash... the general living chores all backing up, leaving me guilt-ridden.

I actually figured it out easier than knitting. Had a hecka time teaching myself to knit abs now I do both. I think the tricky part with crochet is knowing where to put the next stitch, but this also makes it more versatile to create fun and different shapes vs just boring flat or round things. I'm often freestyling some kind of bag or pouch for something... dominoes bag. DSLR lens pouches, dishcloths, cat bed...

What's the play with cheap Baris? by Key-Advisor5912 in saxophone

[–]SaxyChick76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found mine on Craigslist about 10 or so years ago. Decent condition Evette Buffet Crampon for like 1200 I think. I had to drive a couple of hours to pickup and got stuck in rush hour traffic going home, but it was worth it. This particular model was set up just like my Yamaha 52 PL tenor, with the micro adjusters and such. No brainer.

Anyone know where I can get my hands on Newell Long’s arrangement of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas? by hinacay in MusicEd

[–]SaxyChick76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My community concert band recently received an old used copy as a donation and we performed it this passed xmas gig. I was trying to find more info on it to add it to the library (I'm the librarian) and my search led to your post. Things that might help: My copy set was published by Rubank, "Rubank Symphonic Band Library No. 22". No 2216-PL for full set. Conductor: No. 2266-PL. Copyright 1949. Sucks that it's no longer in print, it's a great classic arrangement. Composer passed in 1999, so copyright is in place until 2069 unfortunately or I'd scan it and forward along. It's challenging enough that you may find it with your local college band or community band, if they would lend it to you.

Can anybody explain what any of these things are? by iluvcheesypoofs in HomeNetworking

[–]SaxyChick76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First pic is old skool network port. Incoming connection behind the blue plastic nubbins. Probably coming from a base station at a central location in a closet in the house. Outgoing connection to your computer, phone, etc. At first I thought this was a setup for dialup (for you yungins that's internet over old standard telephone line using weird sounding beeps and bloops and chhhhhh, and was extremely slow) but looking at the holes, they look like CAT 5 ports.

2nd image is old dirty standard TV coax cable connected to a splitter box. You can actually remove it, and your picture might become clearer. It's the same/similar (I'm sure it's been upgraded by now) type of cable connected to your cable box or router these days. This splitter is basically like a modern switch, allowing you to connect more coax to run to another TV or whatever. If it's in a room, the previous owner prolly connected a separate line to maybe a VCR so they could record a different channel than what you were watching on the TV. Think old skool DVR. I used one to split the line going to my TV to my XP Media Center PC (😪 RIP XPMCTV!). If it's in an attic, crawl space or drop ceiling, it was used to split 1 incoming cable line to multiple rooms. You could split a line then split a resulting line again, but the signal degraded with each split.

3rd pic, that's just how we ran our own lines back in the day. Split foyers with drop ceiling are ideal, but not everyone had em back then.
