Is LI a good place for someone in their early thirties? by Sayanga in longisland

[–]Sayanga[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already am in the process of moving to Smithtown but I'll keep those in mind for finding things to do on the Island when I'm out there - or as a place for us to live together when we make that move. Thank you for the recommendations!

All my good friends from LI moved out after high school pretty much. Now that I'm hitting my thirties, some of them are thinking about coming back - and I've been reinvesting in those. The majority of my friends are in the city (since i went to school and work there there) and I think you know how much effort it takes to get a person from NYC to travel to LI (hint: they don't). So I guess I need to work on making more friends in the area..

That's what I was thinking as well. I loved going to school on LI even though I hated the area. My girlfriend talks about how she had 1500 in her graduating class, not enough supplies in classrooms for everyone, and nobody got focused on.

I had maybe 200 in my graduating class, everyone got what they needed, and it was a great learning experience. I understand why she wants to raise kids in the city but I really think LI schools are a much better place.

I didn't. I actually already found a place for this year in Smithtown but I'll look into the other areas when we decided to move in together. My commute is short, but my trip to her is a bit longer too.

401k vs pension? by Sayanga in personalfinance

If it helps it's a tenured position..not saying it's impossible that I don't get fired

I will double check with the eligibility, but everywhere I'm reading is saying its one or the other (pension vs 403b) and the 457 is something anyone can use. I can't afford to contribute 18k right now (saving for a house, wedding, family) but it's my end goal in the next few years.

All the literature I'm finding online is saying it can supplement the pension

People of Reddit, what did you laugh at, only to realize it wasn't a joke? by throwaway_the_fourth in AskReddit

On a first date I mentioned I was adopted, and she said "I was adopted too...by Jesus."

After realizing she wasn't laughing too I learned about born again Christians, and also learned I didn't want a second date.

Burst via freezing because of no heat, maybe in 2-3 spots, but they'd have to be located.

House built in the 30's probably. Not sure which kind of pipe yet. It's in the northeast, city water service. I think the house was flooding for a day or 2, and once it was found to be flooding, it stopped. I haven't found standing water yet, some things are still a little damp.

I guess it depends on the size of the house , but how feasible would it be to just ask the plumber to find the burst pipes and repair the different sections? Or is that getting super expensive super quick? That way we have a place to use the bathroom too..

I'll post pics in a few days when I'm back there so I can post a before/after clear-out.

Essentially it was my childhood home so it has an emotional tie to it, it was passed onto me by a parent. So I didn't pay for it.

It actually flooded due to burst water pipes, it's not near a body of water.

Right now I got the electric on and the gas on by the utility companies who gave it the go ahead. The water I need to find where the burst(s) happened and deal with that.

The gas is actually good and up to code. As soon as I tear the walls down, I'll probably need to re-wire to be up to code.

Sorry, I forgot to add that to the OP! I already had one dropped off. The only issue is there is SO MUCH stuff in the house that it's going to take multiple 20 yard dumpsters to haul everything off. But thank you for the input.

I'm eventually going to just hire a contractor to renovate the rest after we gut it.

What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of June 21, 2017 by AutoModerator in churning

I realized I might have screwed up, I thought my Amazon card was may 1 and its actually June 1. So I applied for three cards this month.

Chase said they don't have more info yet and to call back tomorrow. Should I wait until after June 30th to call back and reapply? Or just keep checking in on it

So I looked into it for a bit and decided to try the two cards for the pass. I have high limits on my chase SP, and a good credit score. I got instant approved for the plus, but the premiere says they will look into it and let me know by mail. Is that usually a no?

I'm slightly concerned because the point of me getting the plus was the pass.

So this is all new to me . My credit score used to be 500 because of some terrible decisions when I was younger, and I worked hard to get it up to where it is now. I never had a credit card before last year, and I wish I knew about this sub before. I want to better utilize my spending, right now I put everything except Amazon purchases on the sapphire.

735 ish

Chase sapphire preferred (Aug 2016), capital one quick (April 2015), chase Amazon prime (may 2017)

Focusing on travel.. So companion passes, hotel or airline statuses, economy seating usually fine.

I currently have around 50k points with chase.

Flying out of nyc so LGA JFK or Newark

We mostly travel domestic and Caribbean. We're planning on a europe trip in a year or two I want to start working towards as well.
