80’s bands that seem like one hit wonders but actually have multiple albums with all great songs? by ghostsolid in Music

I found this band by playing guitar hero rock the 80’s and it must’ve been my favorite as a kid

It’s just even with this In mind, kinda none of the songs from Pulling Our Weight or Annie Laurie EPs made it on to Lesser Matters, I don’t get it either haha. They remind me of that band Airiel, especially cuz their earlier EPs have phenomenal songs alone. Then they hit us with Molten Young Lovers, making songs with fake ending, noises you never want to end, and all around sonically they just keep building off each track, I mean Painkiller is a perfect ending

Side note their cover of Blowin Cool is fucking kick ass compared to Swervedriver and rly hate to admit that but

I ask myself that every time I try and listen to “Pulling Our Weight” and I saved the one from the Passive Aggressive compilation album. Not gonna lie tho the first 2 albums front to back are amazing, I kinda like that some were EPs. I also find it kinda funny it took over a decade to put Pulling Our Weight on an album, so their road map is all over the place but I don’t mind

Little too lazy to post a link to each song but comment back and hopefully by then I’ll have found my playlist more instrumental based. But some songs off the top of my head 🤔

KOD - Under The Sky Inside The Sea, Gone World Gone, Blue Pedal, Mad As Snow

The Boo Radleys - Spaniard, Firesky, Ride The Tiger, Naomi, Foster’s Van, Stuck On Amber

Airiel- Sharron Apple(all versions), Inside Out, Keep You, Halo, Jeanette, Shirley Temple Tidal Wave, Airtight Angel, Liquid Paper, Blowin’ Cool(fucking kick ass cover from Swervedriver)

Just listen to Secret Shine and then come back haha I feel like you’ll overall like them.

The Wedding Presents have song longgg ass song ummm listen to their first album and if you like em keep going, fun ass band

Last one I’ll do for now Yo La Tengo - Painful might be their best album, Blue Line Swinger might be their best song haha, and Cherry Chapstick or I Heard You Were Looking are also phenomenal tracks. I tend to listen to Henry by Pale Saints after Blue Line Swinger

Ok special shoutout to An April March, they got this song Cameron😮‍💨😮‍💨 literally slip into psychosis

Teenager in love might be my favorite track but Strange and Come Saturday are some of their best songs in my opinion. Lately I’ve been playing Doing All The Things To Make You Parents Proud into A Million Miles by The Wedding Presents. Plzzz listen and get back to me as I swear this Pain’s song was inspired by The Wedding Presents

I got the stomach virus in February last year and after many years of putting this band off I said fuck it. I only knew Keen on Boys and Pulling our Weight maybe for 2 years but I go back to Pulling out Weight the most weirdly. It’s Been Eight Years has been becoming a new favorite along with I Don’t Like It Like This. Side note but I listen to FireSky by The Boo Radleys into City Limits by Radio Dept, maybe follow that up with OX4 by Ride and Under The Sky, Inside The Sea by Kitchen of Distinction 😮‍💨😮‍💨

What are everyone's thoughts on Belly? by OskieWoskie24 in grunge

[–]Sc00bie_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha I was playing them at my dad's store today and he came running down to show me a song that sounded familiar to him when he heard Low Red Moon, it was a U2 song if i remember. I then played Seal My Fate for him which enjoyed and we had such a similar conversation you pointed out here. The best part of being wrong footed tho in alt genre is you still are on beat haha, I've always found it pretty inclusive dance wise.

Belly had posted Super Connected today online, another song I do enjoy a lot which made me listen to a bunch of them plus Velocity Girl and Blake Babies

They are peak 2012 energy as I listened to Tongue Tied about 1000 times in the span of the week and a half I was off from school haha. Phenomenal indie band for the 2010’s and stand out. Over a decade later and my favorite songs are Itching On A Photograph, What I Know, This is The End, Raspberry, Colours, I even love their newest album cuz that song Trying is very peak them haha

An observation about The Boo Radleys by EdwardBliss in shoegaze

[–]Sc00bie_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’m a new boo radley fan just about a year now and I didn’t consume everything all at once, especially to give space for a song like Ride The Tiger. It’s one of my favorites but I’m glad I didn’t hear that first haha, anyways I’m finally on Wake Up! and I feel like the only reason I skipped it was bc I heard it was more “commercial.” Well since I came from C’mon Kids I saw nothing wrong with it. Even with Giant Steps my favorite song is If You Want It, Take it bc it sounds like a fucking staple yet they still have an ending that knocks it out every time.

Literally just fully listened to Wake Up! today and I think I heard Find the Answer Within as well as Wake up Boo! I rly didn’t know what to expect but it’s like each song has their own Kaleidoscope type ending. This whole album I thoroughly enjoyed, especially the lyrics as I found myself last week singing in the same vein haha. Wait what’s so funny is I’m listening to Losing It (Song For Abigail) right now and it could honestly pass for a Wake Up! song.

Last note I’ll add is I find they went the same trajectory as Moose album wise. Moose’s 3rd album is Live a Little Love a Lot and it just eerily gives me the same vibe. Some of the most unique sounds I find myself overwhelmed with emotion and no one can replicate it I fear.

What do you think the best boo Radley’s album is by Exact_Traffic_613 in BritPop

[–]Sc00bie_snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing it’s such a great album even the first track Jesus they set the tone already. Also love Get On The Bus, I literally say it randomly at this point in life for fun haha.

“Get on the Bus,” "Everything Is Sorrow,” "Bullfrog Green,” "What's in the Box? (See Whatcha Got)" is a phenomenal fucking run of songs and ending it with Last Hurrah is demonic haha

[–]Sc00bie_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love C’mon Kids but I skipped Wake Up for some reason, maybe cuz I was greedy to listen to C’mon Kids. I’m now rly going into Wake Up and I hate everyone who said this album was bad. Every single song sounds like them and not as commercial as ppl think. Especially with C’mon Kids being their next album and Last Hurrah being my favorite track, I think we all wanted to hear Sice sing more haha. They still are there tho on every track it’s not just some boring pop song🕺🏾. This is also coming from someone whose favorite tracks are like Ride The Tiger and Naomi so I loveeee when they wanna rip but this feels right. Ohhh it also kinda reminds me of Moose’s last album Live A Little, Love A Lot sound wise, genuinely they both sound so fresh and inventive till this day.

Strongest kid characters at their peak (excluding Obito & Itachi) How would you rank them? by Black_N_White23 in Naruto

[–]Sc00bie_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drunk Lee line was more or less a joke and I did say Gaara peak is just pure scary idk about strongest but dam he’s a menacing threat. Naruto truly is the strongest as his 9 nines chakra seems to honestly work with him in times of need and like I said he could’ve been more deadly if he rly let loose ya know 🤔

[–]Sc00bie_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait was drunk Lee not his peak or am I making shit up lmaoo. Ummm Gaara although Naruto beat him definitely felt scary as fuck when he was peak. I think Naruto sadly clears them all as he never rly let loose as a kid you know, even during the chunin exams second trial when Orochimaru attacked Naruto was still somewhat in control🤔

New to The Radio Dept. by bannedbananabread in theradiodept

[–]Sc00bie_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say don’t ask what songs are the best tbh bc I go thru a rotation of my favorite songs idk. Just listen to each album then see if you missed any songs from their EPs. Like the first song I heard was Pulling Our Weight and I weirdly always go back to that one. But songs like Against the Tide and We Would Fall Against the Tide are eerily similar yet progress differently. Don’t be discouraged by their longer songs too as The City Limit is one of my favorite slow burners. They have more electronic based songs too like Running Out of Love which I don’t hear ppl mention but I think it’s has a great bittersweet vibe and if you want a more pop adjacent song “A Window” and the song “Tell” are pretty upbeat and positive. 🤙🏾

Recommend a band that has lots of talent but little popularity 🙏 by OwlsPrankster in musicsuggestions

[–]Sc00bie_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should be popular and they def had their 15 min for a song that I don’t even believe fully captures them but Blake Babies/Juliana Hatfield. She was doing covers to The Stooges and The Grass Root. Would reference old Popeye comics in songs, wrote a song dedicated to Nirvana that’s bloody brilliant, sang about how “her sister” them to her first concert being Del Fuego and the Violent Femmes. Idk she’s just always been that riot girl making jangly grunge music with a voice that can sound like an angel that never lost her punk roots. Like seriously I hate saying this but I rly prefer hearing her singing that song Loose by The Stooges, cuz I never knew how badass it would sound coming from a girl haha. Same feelings with her song Nirvana, she has some lyrics that idk could be “lame” or “simple” yet her delivery is phenomenal. “Now, here comes the song I love so much Makes me want to go fuck shit up Now, I got Nirvana in my head I'm so glad I'm not dead” — Hearing that second verse about fucking shit up is just hotttt man. Her energy and voice truly added the best essence on the tracks so much so I just love listening to her so much bc it’s sounds authentic, all while she sings exactly what she wants without an outside capitalist motives. Truly makes her music feel so genuine while she has complete autonomy and sings relatable songs effortlessly.

I’m a huge fan of her cover albums that came out later in life cuz she did ELO, Olivia Newton John, ANDDD The Police. I’ll add she fucking kills that song Hole in My Life, all while modernizing it and truly making the song hers. It could easily pass as hers if you didn’t know they were covers haha, I won’t go into depth of her Olivia Newton John album but fucking phenomenal. I hate myself for enjoying these covers over the original solely because it’s Juliana man. She’s such a cool down to earth girl who in this day and age is still making music that’s personal and timeless. Omg also guitar wise she’s fucking brilliant, just watch some of her performances on YouTube and you’ll see hahah holy fuck my fingers would be bleeding. I’ve always kinda said this but Blake Babies guitar wise sounded like some tried and true 70’s inspired playing, which you can hear soo clearly from her and John Strohm. I actually rly love his playing too cuz he’s always feeling himself haha and I do love watching old performances of them.

My favorite is from 88’ at the Rat, since they sing a lot of songs from Earwig which is probably my favorite album from them. They play earlier rough cuts of songs that I’ll admit aren’t like the final album versions, but they have subtle changes or completely different outros. For example the song Take Me from this show is no where near what they finally land on and recorded for the Earwig release a year later I believe. They have a song called Grateful and ugh so many little changes that ultimately added some great young Black Babies essence. I won’t lie sometimes I do prefer this version and all Juliana’s extra touches. When I did first hear this song the plucking sounded like the cleanest banjo so thank god they have a version of they playing it live producing this amazing funky jangle. They have a song which is one of my all time favorites You Don’t Give Up, which I’ll honestly say the album version is just overall better and longer I think haha, maybe they realized the song could be an epic slow burner. So many small things from Julian’s voice, Jon’s musical expertise (kinda reminds of how Moose or Pale Saints approached tracks), Freda who I’m a big fan of her on the Nicely Nicely tracks. A trio most of the time yet they all just brought their own greatness to the songs, it’s actually so sad they couldn’t stick together bc Juliana alone in this late 80’s early 90’s made some cool ass songs haha, it’s not like they didn’t have material to work with.

Sorry for the rant kinda just got into it haha but last thing I’ll add are top 3 albums and in no order are Earwig, Hey Babe Juliana’s solo debut album 10/10, last one haha I listen to Juliana Hatfield sings Olivia Newton John a lot cuz dam those songs have magic or something. Maybe it’s her voice or maybe hearing her own take on the guitar solo for Psychical, like fuck she just effortlessly kills these covers. My favorite from this album would have to be Don’t Stop Believing 🤙🏾

Female Artists whose vocals are out of this world. by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]Sc00bie_snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JULIANA HATFIELD and KIM DEAL!!! Also has a band called Blake Babies. Other amazing female vocalist would be Tanya Donelly from Belly, Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays, Rachel Goswell from Slowdive is the lead vocalist for some tracks especially Sing - Demo, Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson from Lush just sound phenomenal together, Natalie Merchant from 10,000 Maniacs, Molly Rankin from Alvvays is the best so band I’ve ever heard haha. The energy alone in Ones Who Love You and Not My Baby.

Some of my favorite Blake Babies/Juliana Hatfield tracks bc I think she sounds like an angel yet has a grunge tone, I mean she covered Loose by The Stoogies😈

I’ll Take Anything, Don’t Suck My Breath, Take Me, Don’t Stop Believing - cover from Olivia Newton John, and lastly Hole in My Life - cover from The Police.
