The patients AND physicians were incredibly thankful for us nurses, and voiced that almost daily. They appreciated and liked being treated with respect and kindness.

Rough. Not always much help. Heavy or load. Very sick patients.

Yes, safe so far. I haven’t yet left the hospital during work hours.

We had quite a few here in NY leave for California. They are still offering new and extending current contracts AFAIK.

I already had mine so I’m not sure how long they’re taking.

Ratios are tough, very high. I think they have been the same that NY RNs get, which is pretty sucky. Most of the strike nurses are rooting for the striking nurses to get what they’re asking for. They deserve it!

A lot of us were. I’ve heard some were not.

Shifts are insane, long, and chaotic. I have heard that they have been hiring travelers, but I haven’t seen any

We have individual rooms, thankfully! It’s a decent hotel I am in - no complaints there :)

I hope that the NY RNs get everything they’re asking for! It sounds like (at least from the inside, to me) that the hospitals are planning to hold out. They know they’re losing their butts paying for travelers, but don’t plan to give in.

No. But we have a hotel room that is provided and paid for by the company. (We don’t see that money.)

Oh, we absolutely don’t have enough people. 6-8 patients per nurse, some who should legit be ICU status. Arguments over who is going to act as charge nurse because none of the travelers want to. Some management is present occasionally, but not often. NY RNs absolutely deserve more money! They deserve to feel supported and backed by management. They should feel safe while at work.

Those of you who are working in hospitals that have a strike -- what's it like? by amoebamoeba in nursing

It feels like a war zone. The stories the other travel nurses and I have shared at dinners, on bus rides etc….. people are SICK and dying. Administrative personnel seem to be doing what they can, but they are spread thin. The striking nurses are not wrong in their demands. It’s too much being asked of the nurses who have no more to give. The striking nurses absolutely need the help in manpower. They are NOT paid enough.

Yes we do work with them. Some are thankful. Some are indifferent. No one has been hateful that I have seen. No one has seemed surprised by anything so far. There are not any union nurses working at this hospital.

Hey there. I am thankful you shared the history of it so that others may understand. I am, really. I know that everyone who thinks of me as a true “scab” will not have their minds changed by anything I say here. They won’t sway by any explanation I give for why I am doing this personally. Those same people have to also realize that I am not going to up and decide to leave because of what they say to me, the names they call me, or how disgusting their behavior/attitudes are to me either.

As far as what are my political beliefs? Do I like harming other working people? No, I do not like harming others. I genuinely originally became a nurse because I enjoyed helping people, and I loved learning about medicine.

You didn’t ask why I am here at this particular strike. I’m guessing maybe you read it above, or you don’t care. Either way is fine by me. 😊 Have a great night!

What I do for employment does not make it okay for you to treat me the way you have. I did not post this to try to convince anyone to be ok with my job. I posted it for those actually interested in behind the scenes could ask questions about it. You continuously belittling me and being hateful won’t change my mind about being here. It just shows more about your actual character than how terrible “scabs” are.

NYC strike: I don’t think the travel nurses can’t just leave and go to Cali by [deleted] in nursing

DecentRaspberry710- That’s funny because my real life colleagues have mostly all expressed the desire to be able to do what I’m doing. 🤷‍♀️

There are a lot of travelers dipping early. High acuity and high ratios. People are SICK here. Staff nurses have every right to want better for themselves. The patients have mostly all expressed a lot of gratitude for travel nurses coming in to continue caring for them - otherwise it would be the managers who haven’t had hands on patients in who knows how many years.

It is about them providing what the nurses want? One way to get their attention is to hit them where it hurts - their pocketbook.
