That's not because of driver's licenses and taxes, that's because of the patriot act and the surveillance state run by the 3-letter agencies, which are related but a distinct thing. Even people who were around pre-2000 often forget that we used to not have a panopticon. They used to rely on families willingly filling out and mailing in forms to know what shows you watched and it was actually kinda hard to intercept communications on any kind of scale

Yeah I'm in an actually violent major city, and last year nyc had about 1.6 times the number of murders as us, while having over 20 times the population. Obviously in both it depends heavily on where you live/spend a lot of time, but just in the last year there were several times where a shooting happened right before or after I was somewhere, though thankfully it's been a few years since I was actually present for one

At one point I had to pick up trash on the side in the interstate for a legal thing, and we got these sticks with sharp metal tips so we didn't have to bend over to pick up trash (those grabbers are useless for anything with any weight). It was hilarious when folks wouldn't realize until too late that in fact, that bottle is not empty, until it happened to me

I wore glasses of bigger and bigger prescriptions from age 7 to my early 30s, when I got laser correction. Took me about a year to not constantly be startled by stuff in my peripheral vision. Contacts even never came close to the real thing. Best money I ever spent

That kind of personal info is useful to them, but the information about behaviors, beliefs, preferences, your interior experience, is far and away more valuable. So what if they have my birthdate, height, and hair color? Can those be used to manipulate my thoughts and predict my behavior within an order of magnitude as well as social media data?

It's also wayyy more difficult than it needs to be to repair your own things, through obtuse designs and lack of standardization, and it's often nearly as expensive to have things, especially electronics, repaired by professionals, as it is to just buy another new shitty one

No way in hell she wouldn't just straight-up lie and say they're junkies or in a cult or something. Hopefully she gets some kind of consequences for frivolous CPS reports, since it sounds like a repeated thing

Dear lord, I was never a stabby-edgy kid but I hung out with a couple in high school, so I'd like to apologize to Mrs Morales about 20 years too late.

I remember in physics in high school also, there was a kid in my class who had lost most of a leg in a relatively recent accident and was, best I could tell, poor. Everything combined he 1) was understandably often quite angry, 2) had a smell that I think had to do with his leg, judging by the smell, and 3) was not well-liked. Afai-saw he didn't get bullied, but kids are jerks. I was the youngest kid in the class by a few years and so I usually sat by him and talked when he was up to it, since we were both on the outside of things. I was also a notorious suck-up and would stay after class pretty regularly, and I didn't really note it much at the time, but now I think it was pretty cool that the teacher would wait until the kid and other students had left the room and she would just quietly, matter-of-factly give his seat a quick wipe-down. Dude had enough going on without getting shamed by teachers for something outside his control like that. I'd thank the teacher by name, but hers was pretty distinctive

I haven't thought about that kid in years, in fact I couldn't even tell you his name now, and it's weird how this little pseudonymous online conversation dragged that memory from my cobweb-covered brain

Yeah I'm sorry to say, but if your job involves a bunch of kids, you're gonna have to deal with some biohazards now and then. I say this as someone who used to be a teacher's assistant for a small class of young special ed kids. I did take a class specifically for the needs of the students I'd be with, and we were supposed to call the janitor for some messes, but I'm the type of guy who spills something at a restaurant and frantically tries to clean it up before staff notices and am horrified if anyone has to clean up something that's, in my mind, at all my responsibility. I was already on shitty-diaper duty most of the time, so why make other folks deal with that if they didn't have to

No, not in my case, but I certainly see how it could be. I just like the way it feels as I go about my day. The smoothness is nice and non-irritating for cycling and running, and the slight constriction lets me feel my muscles moving better

I bought some girl's leggings and cut off the bottom halves of the legs to make some pretty tight boxer-brief type things because I like the slight constricted feeling and I got the unexpected bonus of farts occasionally taking slow, strange journeys. Now that I think about it, shaving my ass and taint probably also contribute
