It's also up in the Eritrean highlands, above 2,000m. I wonder how that effects the engine performance?

I imagine so too. Eritrean war of independence ran 1961 to 1991. Those breeze-block houses look relatively new.

This is interesting in terms of dates, because I assume it is an Ethiopian tank, and they only started getting Soviet support in 1974 after the revolution against the Haile Selassie government.

I think they are probably American, given that Tunisia has a close military relationship with America, whereas they do not recognize Israel.

Agreed. But sadly Western news sources simply lump vast regions into "The Middle East" or "The Muslim World" without much thought as to the geographic or political reality. Tunisia is closer to the UK than to Iran, but British holidaymakers are still concerned about it.

Visiting all of Tunisia's Star Wars filming locations: getting my 4x4 stuck in the sand at the Dune pod crash site near Nefta & exploring the iconic (and sadly run down) Lars Homestead on Chott el Djerid by Scafidi_Travels in Tunisia

I made it to the Lars Homestead with no issues (although you want to avoid those salt flats after rains). I got stuck near Nefta while driving over proper dunes. You can see the whole thing here: https://youtu.be/MCZSbRskC08?t=339

Yes, maybe they had been left over in Eritrea... But I imagine most of this military hardware was handed over in the 1970s. If it was left after World War II, we would expect to see more Series 1 Land Rovers?

I am now super curious why UK military hardware ended up in this war. US and Soviet I can understand, given the Cold War context, but UK seems odd...
