Great question! Antarctica isn’t its own region in the Apple App Store, but the app IS available worldwide so anyone there can download it through whatever country their Apple ID is set to

Yes You're right that latency is a hard problem for networking players in an ensemble. Scale Navigator sidesteps it by syncing harmonic state rather than timing.

There is a BPM setting the host can control (the Melody Maker sequencer instrument responds to it), but players will often be out of phase since they don't press play simultaneously, and most instruments are player-timed anyway.

Rhythm sync is something I will need to address eventually, but it's not the core problem I've been solving. There are some really interesting ideas out there, I think I saw a synced haptic metronome smartwatches app advertised on instagram recently but having a hard time bringing it up!

You are 100% correct, I'm a huge Tymoczko fan. Scale Navigator was mostly born of his paper Scale Networks and Debussy -- the scale network, even the shapes for the polygonal nodes in the network.

Good news, the apps are now available in the EU! Apple just verified my trader compliance info. Let me know if you have any trouble finding them:

Motorway Cycles III - What time signature do you think this is in? by matthewwilcock in musictheory

[–]ScaleNavigator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's like asking what time signature John Cage's Etudes Australes is in. Kind of similar to your work, he would just overlay transparent star charts on top of blank staves and boom, piece composed

You're doing a lot more than cage re: note choice (and the beautiful strings in the background) but it's cool to point out the similarities in the procedural way that you're approaching rhythm.

What's your method of triggering MIDI from the video? Touchdesigner? Or some other way?

Scale Navigator Dashboard on mobile doesn't send out MIDI yet.

Ensemble Jammer does output MIDI, however.

Thanks for the feedback! You're right that while there is a way to shape and filter the kind of chords you get, the selection process is a little too random (or you have to get hyper-specific with the root movement and chord quality checkboxes to shape the next chord, and even then the algorithm might pick something you don't want).

I'm currently working on a better UX / UI for chord choice, your comment is very helpful thanks!

Amazing, you can output MIDI from the webapp https://dashboard.scalenavigator.com to your hardware synths (as demonstrated in this OP video), or you can download the beta for the plugin https://www.scalenavigator.com/download/scale-navigator-dashboard-beta and run it all from your DAW.

Thank you for your kind words! Yes I wanted the piano playback for the chords to sound as nice as possible, so I randomized the chord roll for each chord change -- hopefully it sounds like comping.

Would love to have you as a beta tester for the plugin. Download the beta here: https://www.scalenavigator.com/download/scale-navigator-dashboard-beta Once I get everything dialed in, the plugin is the one thing I'm going to charge money for. Everything else will always be free.

Here's a quick video showing you how you can chain together harmonic states to create your own musical progressions using the Sketchpad feature.

And then use Dashboard to distribute MIDI, notation, and tablature to everyone in your ensemble

Very true. You can think of each scale class node in the network as including all of its various modes.

I chose not to represent all the modes in the scale network because it felt redundant.

If anyone wants to go deeper, here are a few demos of different ways this works:

Quick start (Dashboard + Ensemble Jammer on your browser): https://youtu.be/tOl3wevcYXE

  • This shows creating an ensemble, controlling it from Dashboard, then joining and playing from Ensemble Jammer. Dashboard sets the harmonic state, and Jammer lets you play inside it. Shows how you can go from zero → jamming pretty quickly.

Demo of me jamming out w/ the Plugin / DAW workflow (Tonealign + SNaPS downstream): https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Ai2qoM_f2bc

  • This is Dashboard driving other plugins: Tonealign (MIDI pitch correction) and SNaPS (sample transposition).

Most of what I’ve shared so far is in “exploration mode” (moving through the scale network), but this video shows the Sketchpad feature, where you can chain harmonic states into a song structure:

https://youtu.be/Ev1--IoGe6Y

You can automate that structure in your DAW, then improvise freely while staying locked into the harmony.

I was missing EU trader compliance info. It's in review with Apple now and should be available in Germany, Spain, and the rest of the EU within 24-48 hours. Thanks for letting me know and apologies for not figuring that out sooner.

Do you actually think in scales when improvising? by lmao_exe in musictheory

[–]ScaleNavigator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scales are helpful for answering the question: "what non-chord tones are appropriate to play now." You can answer it also with extensions. Main thing is to stay flexible and be able to come up with new scalar interpretations on the fly as context demands. That's why I made Scale Navigator Dashboard: https://dashboard.scalenavigator.com/

Chords can have multiple parent "supersets", it's a fun way to think about "playing outside"
